Miss the Fort Monmouth Commissary? Head to the Tent Sale

Military folks, active and retired, can buy discounted groceries on Oct. 6 at Naval Weapons Station Earle in Colts Neck.

It may only be for a day, but the military personnel and families hit hard by the closure of the Fort Monmouth commissary can again enjoy their steep grocery discount, this time at Naval Weapons Station Earle.

On Oct. 6 the weapons station will open its gates to authorized users for a tent sale featuring non-perishable and staple food items at a military discount.

The tent sale will be held rain or shine at the NWS Earle mainside facility, accessible from the Route 34 entrance in Colts Neck.

"This tent sale is an effort to see if it's worthwhile for the Joint Base commissary to periodically make merchandise available up here so that NWS Earle personnel and local commissary users (military retirees, etc.) don't have to travel so far," a Naval representative told Patch.

Local officials and member of the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority fought unsuccessfully to keep the Fort Monmouth Commissary open after the closure of the installation.

The Oct. 6 event is only for those with military IDs.
