Brick- Officials in Brick Township and Mantoloking Borough are both hoping their residents sign easements allowing for an Army Corps of Engineers dune project that will shore up the oceanfront and, hopefully, prevent breaches like the one that occurred near the Mantoloking Bridge during Superstorm Sandy. That breach, which led to a 20 foot-deep inlet forming between the ocean and the base of the county-owned bridge across Barnegat Bay, is largely blamed for the resulting floods in mainland neighborhoods such as Shore Acres and Baywood in Brick Township. He left without a restaurant. Foundation awards six grants to organizations in Sandy-battered communities
OceanFirst Foundation’s Relief and Recovery Grant Program is awarding six new grants totaling $93,000 to organizations in Point Pleasant Beach, Toms River and Monmouth County. The recipients are: Ocean Fire Co. #1, Point Pleasant Beach; Caregiver Volunteers of Central Jersey, Toms River; Children’s Home Society, Toms River; Homes for All, Toms River; O.C.E.A.N., Inc., Toms River and United Way of Monmouth County, Farmingdale. Ocean City - John Thornton, a resident of the Ocean City Homes neighborhood on the south end of Ocean City and a teacher at the Art Institute of Philadelphia, recently completed a third segment of a film about the impact of superstorm Sandy on his friends, neighbors and hometown. The first 14-minute segment of the film starts on Saturday, Oct. 27, two days before Sandy makes landfall and continues through the storm. The second part of the film is about Sandy's impact on Ocean City. It starts the day after Sandy makes landfall as Thornton gets his first look at the storm's effects. Read more on Ocean City Patch. County says it hopes to open the facility in the spring of 2013.
Dormant now for more than a year, Fort Monmouth's Teen Center and its pool in Tinton Falls will see new life next year under the ownership of Monmouth County. This week the Fort Monmouth Economic Revilatization Authority approved the transfer of the property to the county under a Notice of Interest program, where the Army conveys a property to an entity at no cost, for the good of the public. Freeholder Lillian Burry, who is a member of the board of FMERA, thanked the board for its approval of the NOI and said the facility will be regional. "We're anxious to have it opened and functioning in late spring," she said. Though the county won't pay for the property directly, it will come with costs.
