Kindergarten Classroom Construction Remains on Schedule for Point Road

Despite Hurricane Sandy, officials say the construction project that will accommodate a full-day kindergarten program in Little Silver remains on track.

Full-day kindergarten remains on track to open in September at Point Road School, according to the district's business administrator. The project, which included the construction of two new classrooms to accommodate full-day kindergarten in Little Silver, is set to begin late March, Little Silver Business Administrator Amy Lerner said in an e-mail. The contractor is scheduled to begin mobilizing site fencing during the last week of March, which was originally slated as spring break for the district. The change in the district's calendar, which eliminated much of spring break to make up for days lost following Hurricane Sandy, might require a change to those plans, said Lerner. "We will need to address all safety and security issues that …

If you had been following the discussions on the Patch you would have seen the statement from Dr. Kossack regarding the hiring of two new teachers. Kossack said that the district's initiative to increase revenue -- through the summer enrichment program, facilities rental fees and non-resident tuition -- has resulted in the "equivalent of one teacher." Teachers will also begin paying more for …   more ›

Plans for Point Road School Addition Near Completion

The project remains on course to accommodate the district's full-day kindergarten program for the 2013-14 school year.

The plans for a new addition at Point Road School are almost complete. The updated building design and classroom layouts were presented to the Little Silver Board of Education at its regular meeting on Thursday, Sept. 12 in the Markham Place School library. Project manager Rick Takakjy, of the engineering firm P.W. Moss & Associates, presented the plans for the addition, which will consist of two new kindergarten classrooms. The new classrooms are part of a five-year strategic plan that was created in 2008 for the district, which will conclude with establishment of a full-day kindergarten program. Little Silver is currently in the minority among the state’s kindergarten programs, as most districts have already enacted full-day programs as …

Everything You Wanted to Know About Full-Day Kindergarten in Little Silver

The district held an information night at Markham on Feb. 16 that brought out about 40 residents with lots of questions.

Members of the community volleyed all manner of questions and concerns at Dr. Carolyn Kossack, superintendent of Little Silver Schools, at a meeting held by the board of education Thursday night to discuss implementing full-day Kindergarten in the district. About 40 residents attended the information session, which provided details on the upcoming vote on March 13 for a $750,000 bond referendum to build two classrooms at Point Road School to accommodate full-day Kindergarten, and questioned the superintendent about the timing and need for the program. Residents expressed concern over the pending revaluation of borough properties, the district taking on more debt and whether Little Silver could continue to excel with the half-day …

In fairness to all who attended the meeting, it should be noted that the vast majority felt that a March vote was unfair to the taxpayers, regardless of how they may feel about the issue. Placing votes that will effect taxes and spending at a time of year that no one even thinks of elections is poor stewardship of the responsibility to represent all the voters. A least 5 asked the school board …   more ›

Little Silver BOE to Give Presentation on Full Day Kindergarten Referendum

Board of Education to host presentation Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. in the Markham Place School library.

Little Silver school officials are inviting the public to a town meeting to be held in the Markham Place School library on Thursday, Feb. 16 to discuss and answer questions about the $750,000 bond referendum which, if passed, would construct two additional classrooms at Point Road School and provide for a full day kindergarten program as early as Sept. 2013. The referendum will be voted on by residents in a special election from 2 to 9 p.m. on March 13. Superintendent Dr. Carolyn Kossack, Board President Kevin Brennan, Board Administrator Amy Lerner and Board Member Christian Smith stopped by borough hall Monday to talk about the project with the town council, mentioning the upcoming forum in their discussion. In her report to council, …

The superintendent did an excellent presentation. However, she left critical information out of her presentation: 2 teacher salaries and benefits. While the capital debt will increase the taxes for schools, she neglected to mention that the salary/benefit addition would cause the taxes to increase more than that. She's counting on being able to raise the levy at least 2% a year as permitted by …   more ›

Little Silver to Vote on Full-Day Kindergarten Referendum

Special election to be held Tuesday, March 13.

A special election will take place in Little Silver on March 13 to determine whether or not taxpayers will fund the majority of a $1 million addition to Point Road School to accommodate a full-day kindergarten program. The Little Silver Board of Education unanimously passed a resolution to send the project to a referendum at their last meeting on Jan. 12. As proposed, the one-story addition would consist of two kindergarten classrooms connected by a corridor, bringing the total number of kindergarten classrooms at the school to five. The bond referendum being voted on would cover $750,000 of the project's costs, with the remaining $250,000 to be funded from the district's capital reserve. The project is potentially eligible for state aid, …

Lets be clear- This is a million dollar solution in search of a problem. Many homeowners asked the Board to postpone the election until November, given Little Silver is being re-assessed, and yes, many people will see increased taxes with or without it. Little Silver's 3rd grade test scores are the envy of the county now. We were given absolutely no data about the scores of the half day programs …   more ›
