STORM: Snow Brings New Outages For Some

Others have had no power at all for 10 days

Gov. Christie told a gathering on Long Beach Island on Wednesday that the coming Nor'easter and anticipated snowfall would likely cause "a setback" in the work underway for full power restoration. Boy, he wasn't kidding. JCP&L, on its website, is acknowledging that the nor'easter has created new outages, often for customers who were hit with outages in the height of Sandy's destructive path, had power restored and are now in the cold darkness yet again. "Late Wednesday, heavy, wet snow and high winds from the nor'easter resulted in approximately 120,000 additional power outages in the Jersey Central Power & Light service territory," says the JCP&L website. The company serves 13 counties in New Jersey, including Monmouth and Ocean. There …

JCP&L to Continue Working on Outages "As Safety Permits"

Still 74,012 in the dark in Ocean and Monmouth counties

There are currently 28,176 JCP&L customers without power in Ocean County and 45,836 without power in Monmouth County, according to an update on the JCP&L website. Those numbers change constantly as crews continue to work on outages throughout the region. However, the nor'easter starting to move into the area may cause new outages as well as coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service. JCP&L, in a prepared statement, says: "Jersey Central Power & Light (JCP&L) has restored power to more than 900,000 of the 1.2 million JCP&L customers affected by Hurricane Sandy, marking five consecutive days where crews have restored at least 100,000 customers per day. While restoration continues, JCP&L is preparing for a Nor'easter that is …

TELL US: Mall Opens, People and Devices Recharge. A Good Thing?

The Freehold Raceway Mall offered most of the comforts of home to the storm-weary and powerless on the Saturday after Sandy.

If there was a power outlet left available in any corner of the Freehold Raceway Mall on Saturday, chances are someone was about to plug in a phone, a laptop, an iPod or just about any device with a drained battery. The mall reopened at 10 a.m. Saturday after regaining power Friday afternoon and has reinstated its normal business hours. Floor outlets near seating areas, wall outlets on pillars and power strips on folding tables in improvised charging stations at the Mall's center court were all in constant use by the storm weary of all ages. The center court Starbucks drew waves of caffein-seekers and the mall's food courts and restaurants (many of them were open) were mobbed. If you were there, or at another mall, tell us about it. Was it…

NJTransit System Reports 'Unprecedented Devastation'

Extensive damage could delay service restorations across rail and bus linking NJ, NY and Philadelphia

The nation's largest statewide public transportation system says it faces a massive repair and restoration effort in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. NJTransit, consisting of 12 commuter train lines, 3 light rail lines and 261 bus routes, suffered "unprecedented devastation" from the storm, according to James Simpson, New Jersey's transportation commissioner and chairman of the NJTransit board. The system normally provides 895,000 weekday trips, servicing 164 rail stations, 61 light rail stations and more than 19,000 bus stops. Little of that activity was evident on Tuesday, however. Instead, transit crews had begun an extensive damage review. “With the break of daylight, NJ TRANSIT began to inspect and assess the full extent of the damage," …

Virginia Urban Search And Rescue Team On Way To NJ

The Virginia Task Force One team is on its way to Fort Dix as it prepares to respond to destruction after Hurricane Sandy.

Before Fairfax County's world-renowned Urban Search and Rescue Team assists in major disasters — such as Hurricane Sandy — there is a lot of preparing and waiting involved. Much of that occurs in a nondescript industrial-style building in Chantilly.  On Monday, the 80-member team — many of whom had been up through much of the night — prepared to deploy to Fort Dix, N.J., to assist in recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. They departed on buses shortly before noon, and only found out minutes before leaving where they would be going to wait for recovery efforts. The amount of time they'll be gone is still unknown, and will largely depend on how long the hurricane lasts.  "We expect to be gone from two days to 14 days," said …

Tropical Storm Sandy Could Evolve Into A Hurricane By Wednesday

A potentially powerful autumn store might be heading up the coast.

The New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the National Weather Service are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Sandy to see what impact it might have on the area as it moves up the coast.  "There is a potential for a very powerful and dangerous autumn store to affect our region early next week," the OEM reports on its Facebook page.  "There is a growing threat of strong winds, very heavy rainfall, coastal flooding and inland flooding to affect our region early next week." The National Weather Service says the impact the storm has on the area depends on how the storm tracks over the next five days or so. While it is currently listed as a Tropical Storm as of Tuesday, the National Weather Service expects it to be upgraded to a …
