Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over your town and beyond that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question that was asked back in 2010 when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. After months of anticipation, coffee lovers in Little Silver and Oceanport can grab a premium cup of joe right around the corner and never have to venture near Route 35. Rook Coffee Roaster, launched in 2010 by Oceanport residents Holly Migliaccio and Shawn Kingsley, opened the doors to its newest outpost at the Little Silver Train Station on Monday. “We leaked the word on our Facebook page late on Friday, that we would open our doors in the morning. That small leak helped for a fantastic first day,” said Migliaccio in a release. The Little Silver Borough Council accepted the beanery's $10,800 bid to run the train station's concession area, which had been vacant since 2010, in April. Event to feature handcrafted items from throughout the tri-state area and a visit from Santa.
Small business doesn't get much tinier than a single artisan selling their handcrafted work. And on Small Business Saturday this Nov. 26, the Holiday Arts and Crafts Extravaganza, held in the Grand Hall of Monmouth Park Racetrack, will feature a wide variety of individuals from throughout the tri-state area offering a wealth of unique presents-to-be. Items such as painted glassware, photography, ceramics, jewelry, childrens and ladies apparel, doll clothes, yard art, wood crafts, sports memorabilia, mushroom bird ornaments and more will be on display and up for sale. In an informal survey of local businesses, Patch found many in Monmouth County still have positions to fill.
Even with the state's bleak 9.1 unemployment rate, retailers gearing up for the holiday selling season -- from Christmas tree purveyors to athletic gear retailers -- say they still have jobs to fill. Patch did some investigating and it turns out that there a seasonal jobs to had, right here in Monmouth County. Big chains like Toys 'R Us, with locations in Hazlet and Eatontown, need people to stock shelves, work the overnight, help on the salesfloor and ring up customers at all those doorbuster sales. The grocery giant Wegmans is beefing up staff at it's Manalapan store to handle all the holiday dinners shoppers are planning. But the jobs aren't just at the box stores.
