Kind Burger Owner: 'We're Down, But We're Not Out'

"We've been speechless by the outpouring of help," Sea Bright business owner Anthony Cafaro said.

On the Monday before Thanksgiving, skies were overcast in Sea Bright and there was a damp, bone chilling wind. The sidewalks, crowded in summer with beachgoers, are now narrow corridors made up of the destroyed innards of the downtown's businesses. Directly across from the public beach is what's left of Kind Burger, the popular burger joint opened this summer by the Cafaro family of Rumson, with a special gluten-free menu in honor of their six-year-old daughter Olivia. Where a few weeks ago the aroma of grilled beef flowed through it's open garage-style front windows, now there is stench of sewage. Gone is the bright, modern space with chic black chairs and butcher block tables. Inside the dark cave-like shell, Kind Burger owner Anthony …

Recovery: Feeding Troops in Sea Bright

Woody's Food/Tent City is feeding thousands of Hurricane Sandy refugees and volunteers a day

"In all my 39 years as a fireman, I've never seen anything as bad as what  Hurricane Sandy did here," said Sea Bright Fire Department Captain Dave Estelle, also a retired Deal policeman, as he chatted in front of the firehouse with other volunteers readying to feed the troops dinner. To the right of Estelle, where there used to be a public beach parking lot, there was an encampment: rows of U.S. Army National Guard tents, refrigeration trucks, hummers, soldiers and civilian volunteers scurrying around, sorting through supplies and on alert to help. Chris Wood, or Woody, the owner of Woody's Ocean Grille who spearheaded what had become unofficially dubbed Food/Tent City, milled around, totally in sync with his mission. He directed food, …

Sea Bright Beach Club Access Opened

State Supreme Court appellate panel rules that the club must provide more public access to beaches taxpayers pay to have replenished

The tide has turned once again in a familiar Sea Bright beach access fight. After a settlement in the courts in 2006 that called for a string of private beach clubs to open at least portions of their beachfronts, one club, Sea Bright Beach Club, refused and is now being forced, via a new state Supreme Court ruling, to stop limiting public access, a Star Ledger story reported. The ruling is based on the idea that as taxpayer-funded beach replenishment made the beaches at the club more extensive, then taxpayers who foot the bill for it should be able to use those beaches.  The new ruling, which came from a panel of three appellate judges, says that a 1993 ruling that allowed beach clubs to limit public access to a 15-foot swath close to the …

On Tonight's Menu: Ama Ristorante

The popular Atlantic Highlands restaurant has a new Sea Bright home, logo and menu

It’s time for a taste of Tuscany by the sea. Ama Ristorante at Driftwood, Sea Bright, is opening its Ocean Avenue doors at 5 p.m. Friday, starting a tradition of serving fine Italian cuisine in a new oceanfront setting at the cabana club. Ama, which means love in Latin, is a also a small town in Tuscany — apt reflections of the restaurant’s regional motif and the chef Pat Trama’s passion for the Tuscan food and wines. For the new location, Trama — who has collaborated on the venture with the Driftwood owners and longtime local builders, the Stavola family — has carefully chosen a wine list to perfectly complement the menu. Calling the list an “an exciting addition to our dining experience,” said Trama, “we tried over 500 wines for Ama’s …

Different 'Kind' of Burger Joint Opens in Sea Bright

Kind Burgers offers Angus, Kobe, lamb, turkey and portobello burgers with the option of gluten-free rolls.

Just a couple weeks past schedule, Kind Burgers has rolled back its giant storefront windows to let the aroma of grilling beef flow out onto the sidewalks of downtown Sea Bright. "My children have been waiting with bated breath for this place to open," said Kate Grossardh of Rumson. She and her son Will visited the new burger joint on Tuesday for a Kobe burger and and some Bell and Evan gluten-free chicken tenders. "We live right over the bridge so it's a close walk to somewhere that actually has healthy food," she said. Will, 8, seemed less concerned with the healthful benefits of his chicken tenders and more with how hungry he was after his three-hour practice with his soccer team, the Rumson Dirty Dawgs. "The food is good," he said …

AMA Restaurant Moving to Driftwood This Summer

The popular Italian restaurant closed its doors in Atlantic Highlands and will reopen at the Sea Bright beach club.

When AMA Ristorante Tuscana reopens later this summer, the restaurant will not only have a slightly new name but vastly different surroundings than its former cozy Atlantic Highlands location where for three years it fed those lucky enough to land a table. The restaurant, which features authentic Tuscan fare, will move to the Driftwood Cabana Club in Sea Bright in late summer and be surrounded by the beach and the river, according to a release. A slight name change will reflect the change and the restaurant will be known as AMA at the Driftwood but will continue to feature dishes from its popular menu prepared by Chef Pat Trama, who worked under reknowned restauranteurs Charlie Palmer of Brooklyn's River Cafe and Drew Nieporent of Nobu …
