"We've been speechless by the outpouring of help," Sea Bright business owner Anthony Cafaro said.
On the Monday before Thanksgiving, skies were overcast in Sea Bright and there was a damp, bone chilling wind. The sidewalks, crowded in summer with beachgoers, are now narrow corridors made up of the destroyed innards of the downtown's businesses. Directly across from the public beach is what's left of Kind Burger, the popular burger joint opened this summer by the Cafaro family of Rumson, with a special gluten-free menu in honor of their six-year-old daughter Olivia. Where a few weeks ago the aroma of grilled beef flowed through it's open garage-style front windows, now there is stench of sewage. Gone is the bright, modern space with chic black chairs and butcher block tables. Inside the dark cave-like shell, Kind Burger owner Anthony …

The longtime tradition at the Rumson bar and grill of peanuts and good company has come to an end over lawsuits and allergies. Has society become overly litigious and hyper-cautious?
For decades, the comforting crunch of peanut shells underfoot, a table with a riverfront view and a standing appetizer of mindless shelling, munching and good company is what many people in the Rumson-Fair Haven area have counted on from Barnacle Bill’s. Going through those auto-pilot motions of walking in to a place where old friends meet, scooping up those peanuts, cracking and catching up is something that has been known to soothe the local soul like hot chicken soup on a cold day. Granted, some people don’t even like chicken soup, but if it’s what’s been passed on to them as a staple comfort, it’s what brings them back to that good, warm feeling inside — like those peanuts at Barnacle Bill’s. It’s pretty simple. It’s a tradition. Call …

My child was a student at Holy Cross School in Mrs. (Bernadette) Davis' fourth grade class this year. My husband and I send our children to Holy Cross at great financial sacrifice because of the education but more importantly, the amazing nurturing community of the school. As in any school situation, there are things that we support and agree with and also things that we do not. However, as educated adults, we know that for any successful school, company, friendship, or marriage to survive and flourish, there must be first and foremost honesty and open dialogue. In the past, when there were issues that concerned us, we spoke to the teacher or an administrator. Hopefully, this is how things work in a civilized society. Unfortunately, I am …

Graphic artist Meredith Kole comes up with a solution for panicked parents with allergic children
You could say that Rumson mom Meredith Kole had an allergic reaction to an epi pen problem. Surrounded by children with allergies, play dates at the mother of four’s home had become a game of hide-n-seek with myriad plastic bagged epi (epinephrine) pens and scattered notes about allergies specific to each frolicking child. With so many children severely allergic to so many different things these days, when several would show up for play, “I found myself trying to keep track of who came in with an epi pen, what they were allergic to and where the pens were,” Kole said. “The parents were diligent about it, but I found I was having spurts of panic about remembering it all at a moment’s notice, should that emergency occur … Who was it that was…

Ship-shaped restaurant serves up juicy patties of beef with crispy steak fries and provides a homey, casual family dining experience.
As a lover of traditional American food, I’ve had my share of burgers. If you are from the area you most likely know that one of the best places to get a generously sized piece of the best quality beef is at Barnacle Bill’s in Rumson. Juicy and sinful, you really must treat yourself to Barnacle’s when you are craving it. Located on First Street by the river, the restaurant looks like a ship sitting on the water, with lifesavers and anchors decorating the inside. They have unlimited amount of peanuts, allowing the shells to scatter the floor. It has a truly homey and casual feel and a great place to bring your family. My family and I have been going there for years, and every time we have been there, it has been packed. The signature …

Gourmet deli offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner in two locations.
Located in both Rumson and Oakhurst, Brennan's Delicatessen has been a family favorite for years. I started going to the Oakhurst location while I was attending Monmouth University. I would often meet family and friends there for lunch or on a Sunday morning. The main attraction of Brennan's is the wide selection of speciality sandwiches that they have available with your choice of bread or wrap. My two favorite sandwiches are the # 8 with smoked turkey, roasted garlic, swiss cheese, and sundried tomato mayo, and the # 13 with proscuitto, fresh mozzarella, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato, oil and vinegar. Both sandwiches are delicious in their own special way. Other notable mentions – my brother enjoys the # 2 cappacola, salami, …
