Garrett Sickels joins Navesink Hook and Ladder and Thomas Doremus to become chief of the department
Joking that he had to adjust his glasses to make sure what he was reading was true, Red Bank Mayor Pat Menna said at last week’s Borough Council meeting that it was “with great pleasure and, indeed, overwhelming joy” that he accept the request of resident Garrett Sickels to join Navesink Hook and Ladder Company of the Red Bank Volunteer Fire Department. A senior at Red Bank Regional High School, the young Sickels, who is a Penn State-bound football star, also is the son of Administrator Stanley Sickels. Recognized as one of the country’s top linemen, Garrett Sickels also comes from a long line of community volunteers. His father, Stanley, having been administrator for many years, raised his family with wife Donna, in the borough, so Menna …

A serious two-car accident on Newman Springs Road resulted in a man being trapped in his car.
Update, 9:42 p.m.: According to Red Bank Capt. Darren McConnell, two people were transported to Riverview Medical Center with what turned out to be non-serious injuries following Thursday night's crash. Both were occupants of the car that was struck on its side. The driver was a 27-year-old Keyport man and a 36-year-old female passenger from Red Bank. The driver of the Toyota was a 20-year-old Morganville man. The incident took place at Newman Springs Road and Clifford Place when the vehicle being driven by the Keyport man exited Clifford Place and collided with the Toyota. Summonses are pending. The investigation is being conducted by Ptl. Beau Broadley of the Traffic Bureau. Red Bank first responders were forced to use hydraulic …

None injured in an evening crash in Red Bank that cut power to the intersection of Shrewsbury Avenue and Newman Springs Road.
The driver of a late model Jeep apparently lost control while approaching the intersection of Shrewsbury Avenue and Newman Springs Road before 8 p.m., leaving the road and crashing into an electrical pole. The driver and his female companion were apparently unhurt, both taking turns pacing on a nearby corner, cell phones in hand, and describing the accident emphatically to police taking report. The pole, severed, leaned against the front of the Jeep, sparks shooting off intermittently beneath the vehicle's chassis. The crash resulted in the loss of power to the busy intersection, leading to police helping direct traffic.
