Point Road's Academic Achievement Results High in State But Lagging Peers

New Jersey Department of Education released performance reports on area schools.

Point Road School received high and very high marks compared to the rest of the state, according to data recently released by the New Jersey Department of Education. However, the school was average or lagging in comparison to a peer group. The state's new performance reports, which replace the school report cards issued in past years, rates schools on standardized test results, college and career readiness and student growth at the middle school level.  The performance report looks at a school's ranking compared to the rest of the state and to a peer group with a similar demographic. Point Road's peers included Nut Swamp in Middletown, Deane Porter in Rumson and Viola L. Sickles in Fair Haven, among others. Point Road outperformed 76 …

The Trials and Tribulations of Point Road School Drop Off

With construction starting on the new kindergarten classrooms and ongoing road closure due to the Seven Bridges project, getting your child to school each morning keeps getting more challenging.

Just when Point Road School parents thought they had adjusted to navigating the road closures and detours in place because of the Seven Bridges Road project, the curve balls seem to keep coming. This week, the closing of the Seven Bridges teachers' lot and usual drop off area for many students (to accommodate construction of new kindergarten classrooms) sent lines of traffic crawling up and down Lippincott and Westwood, only to encounter a separate road improvement project going on back there.  And then there was the brush pickup public works scheduled at the height of it all Thursday morning along Point Road, requiring drivers to snake by, single file. "The traffic situation is a concern and the coordination of the multiple projects has …

VIDEO: Celebrating Different Ways of Learning at Point Road School

The seventh annual Different Learners Day helps teach third graders to accept classmates who have different learning challenges.

Over the course of one day this week, Point Road third graders got to hear about what it's like living with cerebral palsy, how hard it is to shoot a basket with one arm and that having cochlear implants can be pretty cool. As part of the seventh annual Different Learners Day on March 14, students also got to meet and learn about seeing eye dogs, learn how difficult it is to maneuver in wheelchairs and how to say "giraffe" in sign language. "This day is great," said Julie Ford, the district's guidance counselor who helped organize the event. "But we want students to carry through these ideas into future situations." Third grade classes rotated through five rooms where they learned about different disabilities.  In each room the students …

Book Lovers Have a Ball at Point Road [VIDEO]

Students dressed as their favorite characters and celebrated reading with some new dance steps Friday night.

There was a giant stomping through Point Road's gym Friday night. He was joined by a wimpy kid, a prairie girl, a bunch of caped superheroes in underpants and a host of other children's book characters brought to life by students for the school's annual Book Lover's Ball. Coordinated by Eileen Fitzpatrick, the school's librarian done up like a Dorothy straight out of Oz, the event celebrated reading and capped off the school's book fair and dance week.

Point Road 3rd Graders Get to Ask Mayor the Tough Questions

An interview with the mayor, via Skype, gave students the opportunity to ask why the borough has no tall buildings and whether his job is frustrating.

Robert C. Neff, Jr. has had to face some tough questions during his first term as Little Silver's mayor, like whether the borough's revaluation could be postponed or if residents should be responsible for shoveling sidewalks. But on Tuesday he got hit with some of the most challenging questions posed by residents, like if he knew how long Little Silver Creek was and whether his job as mayor was frustrating, when he was grilled by Point Road students as part of a technology research project. Neff, who said the experience was "awesome," was interviewed via Skype by third grade students who asked questions they had generated with the help of Point Road technology teacher Wendy Whittle. "The third grade students were very excited and we are …

Kindergarten Classroom Construction Remains on Schedule for Point Road

Despite Hurricane Sandy, officials say the construction project that will accommodate a full-day kindergarten program in Little Silver remains on track.

Full-day kindergarten remains on track to open in September at Point Road School, according to the district's business administrator. The project, which included the construction of two new classrooms to accommodate full-day kindergarten in Little Silver, is set to begin late March, Little Silver Business Administrator Amy Lerner said in an e-mail. The contractor is scheduled to begin mobilizing site fencing during the last week of March, which was originally slated as spring break for the district. The change in the district's calendar, which eliminated much of spring break to make up for days lost following Hurricane Sandy, might require a change to those plans, said Lerner. "We will need to address all safety and security issues that …

If you had been following the discussions on the Patch you would have seen the statement from Dr. Kossack regarding the hiring of two new teachers. Kossack said that the district's initiative to increase revenue -- through the summer enrichment program, facilities rental fees and non-resident tuition -- has resulted in the "equivalent of one teacher." Teachers will also begin paying more for …   more ›

Penny Wars Add Up at Little Silver School

Fundraisers at both schools raised close to $4,500 for Union Beach school music programs.

They filled up plastic milk jugs, Zipoc bags and Solo cups and in the end, Point Road School students collected almost $4,000 in change to buy instruments for a Union Beach school to replace equipment damaged during Hurricane Sandy. The Penny Wars were held in conjunction with an instrument drive and candy cane fundraiser at Markham Place that netted almost $500 and seven instruments, including a harp, two flutes and a drum set. "In no way did we think Point Road would ever collect that much money," said Little Silver PTO Co-President Phyllis Sauer. The organization helped organize the fundraisers and is footing the bill for a pizza party for the class that brought in the most money at Point Road (Mrs. Ince's second graders). A candy cane …

Point Road Nurse Hanging Up Her Stethoscope

Joyce Keller is retiring after serving as chief boo boo inspector and lost-tooth catcher for 22 years.

Joyce Keller says that while lots of things have changed since she began doling out Band-Aids and hugs as Point Road School’s nurse 22 years ago – like an increase in students’ medical challenges and paperwork – some things remain the same. “The people in this building are just exceptional,” Keller, whose last day before retirement is Friday, says of her coworkers. “They’re all so helpful and supportive – there’s no competition.” “I’ll miss the kids and people I work with equally,” she says. “I love the little kids, it’s like working with my grandchildren all day.” What won’t she miss? “Lice,” Keller, 61, laughs, “I won’t miss that.” Keller says the worst outbreak she experienced since she started at Point Road in September 1990 was about …

Point Road Cookie Exchange a Sweet Holiday Treat for Teachers

A sea of sprinkles and confectioners sugar awaited Point Road teachers and staff on Wednesday.

Did you ever wonder, as you were rolling your dough in sugar or pressing a Kiss snugly into a fresh-baked cookie, what your kids' teachers faces looked like as they plucked it off the tray at the annual cookie exchange at school? Patch snuck inside Room 123 at Point Road Wednesday morning to check out the tables laden with all manner of fresh-baked treats organized by the PTO and overseen by chairs Stephanie Brannagan and Deborah Petrone. All teachers and staff got a nifty red bakers box to fill to the brim with baked treats along with a pointsetta for good measure.

Point Road Chorus Concert: Holiday Tunes and Coldplay [VIDEO]

The holiday tradition brought songs of the season to friends at family members on Thursday night. Add your photos to our gallery!

There were traditional holiday jingles, dreams of lots of snow and Coldplay at Point Road School's 2012 Holiday Concert Thursday night. The third and fourth grade students, slicked and sparkly in blazers and tights, sang their hearts out under the direction of music teacher Eric Clark and accompanied by the very able eighth grader Griffin Perry on piano and Markham Place band director Stephanie Bennett lending a helping hand. The chorus gave rousing renditions of "Spirit of Hanukkah" and The Polar Express's "Hot Chocolate" and slowed it down to recognize those still grappling with the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy with Coldplay's "Fix You."
