Viscomi died on Tuesday after a long battle with a rare genetic disease.
Lucas S. Viscomi, 19, Little Silver, died Tuesday, May 21, 2013, at home, surrounded by his loving family and caring nurses. He was born in Red Bank and lived all his life in Little Silver. He attended Ladacin Network/Shroth School in Wanamassa where he had many friends and was lovingly cared for. Lucas courageously battled a rare genetic disease Metachromatic Leukodystrophy for more than 10 years with much laughter and tremendous will. The medical community learned so much from Lucas's life in dealing with all the life threatening issues this disease dealt him. Grace Regina (Gibbons) Mahon, 85, of Tinton Falls, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday, April 11, 2013 surrounded by her family. She was born and raised in Newark, NJ. The daughter of the late James Nelson Gibbons and the late Catherine Cunningham Gibbons, she graduated from Good Counsel High School and became a Registered Nurse after graduating from Saint James Nursing School in 1947. She married Joseph R. Mahon in 1950 and moved to the Jersey Shore and over the next thirteen years had eleven children. Gerard "Gerry" Deverin, 48, an avid lacrosse player and Chapel Beach Club member, died on March 1, according to Legacy.com. Alexandre Carlos Grilli, 76, who lived with his wife of 53 years in Little Silver, died on Tuesday, Feb. 26, according to Legacy.com. Until recently, Grilli was an avid soccer player and played with local club teams. John E. Karlin, 94, a Little Silver resident who helped steer telephone calls away from exchanges to all-number dialing following World War II and developed the phone keypad, died on Jan. 28, according to an article in The New York Times. Karlin worked for Bell Labs from 1945 to 1977 as an industrial psychologist, according to the article, and was responsible for helping to develop features like the length of a phone cord, the size of its buttons once rotary dialing became a thing of the past and the format of the phone keypad. Robert Anthony Melita, 21, a 2009 graduate of Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School, passed away at his Fair Haven home on Dec. 27. The son of Charles and Beth Melita, Robert "had a zest for life and, for those who had the privilege of knowing him, he has left his footprint on their lives," his obituary on the Thompson Memorial Home Web site said. Sea Bright resident Nancy J. DeScenza, 52, who served on the Shore Regional Board of Education for 26 years, died Monday, Nov. 5. DeScenza was raised in Monmouth Beach and Sea Bright and in 1978, became the youngest member of the Sea Bright Board of Education at 19. She retired from the board in September. Nancy was a strong woman who courageously fought long and hard against breast cancer for 10 years, according to Legacycom. Red Bank resident Edward R. Perkins, Jr., formerly of Rumson, died on Sunday, Nov. 4. Perkins, 90, taught seventh grade math at Markham Place School in Little Silver for 30 years until his retirement in 1986, according to an obituary in the Asbury Park Press. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carol; his children, Karen Douglas of Palo Alto, CA, Rich of Nashua, NH, and Mark of Cupertino, CA; and his grandchildren, Heradon, Russ, Anna, Pamela, Carol, Kit, and Nate.
