The county parks system says it will be a challenge to repair the popular trail segment between Atlantic Highlands Marina and Highlands.
At a recent meeting of Monmouth County Park trail enthusiasts, Park Manager Ken Thoman showed slides of the damage Sandy wrought on the popular Henry Hudson Trail Oct. 29 and lamented, "What are we going to do?" The breathtakingly scenic route, alongside the sailboat-studded Sandy Hook Bay, is lost. This almost-secret oasis between the Atlantic Highlands Marina and the Highlands border at Popamora Point, established in 2009, where strolling couples, joggers, cyclists, dog walkers and deep thinkers could escape from suburbia, will remain closed indefinitely due to storm damage. Registration is for all fall programs and begins at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning.
The Monmouth County Parks System is gearing up for another full fall season of activities and programs for all ages. Registration begins Wednesday, Aug. 15 at 8 a.m. for activities such as horseback riding for kids and guided tours of county parks throughout the fall season. The Monmouth County Park System has a load of free and inexpensive summer activities for kids and grown-ups with no registration required.
Part of the beauty of summer is the whim. Waking up on a beautiful day and saying, "I know we never got around to buying a boat, but let's go canoeing on the Navesink." The problem is, activities that involve equipment - like boats or bows and arrows or seine nets - all require some major planning. Which is a major killer of enthusiasm for those, who through no fault of their own, were born with an extra dose of whimsy.
