It's official: With President Barack Obama's acceptance speech in Charlotte Thursday night, both the Republicans and Democrats have formally chosen their nominees for the 2012 presidential election. Let the real race begin. A lot can change between now and Nov. 6: Gaffes, scandals or even major international news events could shift the dynamics of the campaign. The latest Gallup polls show registered voters preferring Obama to Mitt Romney by just one percentage point, 47 percent to 46 percent. A USA Today/Gallup poll taken just before the party conventions found American voters think Obama is more likeable, but trust Romney more to handle the economy. Pundits have been busy for months handicapping the major-party candidates on various …

New Jersey Republican and Democratic insiders believe Mitt Romney's VP pick will galvanize each of their parties, but they're divided whether Paul Ryan is a better choice than Chris Christie. Of the 24 Republican respondents to Patch's flash poll this weekend, 25 percent strongly agree and 25 percent strongly disagree with the statement, "Paul Ryan is a stronger VP candidate than Chris Christie would have been." Nearly 17 percent said they somewhat agreed with the statement, while 12.5 percent somewhat disagreed and 20.8 percent were not sure. However, more than 50 percent of the 27 Democratic respondents either strongly agreed or somewhat agreed that Ryan was the better choice, while 18.5 percent somewhat disagreed and 11.1 percent …

Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan selected as GOP nominee, while NJ governor may serve as convention keynote speaker.
After months of rumors that New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie would be tapped as the GOP vice president nomineee, Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney instead on Saturday chose Wisconsin Rep. Paul Ryan for the spot. Christie may now have the opportunity to serve as the GOP convention's keynote speaker later this month in Tampa, Fla. Being named the keynote speaker could open the door for Christie to run in 2016 and still allow him to serve a second term as governor. The New Jersey governor, who in the past has stated he was not interested in the vice presidential nomination, may have ultimately lost out in the long run due to his short fuse and short record. In just the last month, Christie branded a reporter as an "idiot" down in Monmouth County …

The team of Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan will take on Barack Obama and Joe Biden in November. Romney and Ryan, a Wisconson Republican congressman, teamed up in Norfolk, VA, this morning to make the official announcement, although details leaked out hours before. Ryan is considered a rising star in the GOP and is best known for his proposed budget that calls for an overhaul of Medicare. Some analysists call Ryan a "bold choice" because the congressman's selection is considered a controversial move and a departure from the "safe" reputation Romney has. Ryan has a long voting history on issues that Democrats want to run on — health care and Social Security, especially. Ryan also has never run for a statewide ticket, according to ABC News. …

The Republican presidential candidate makes a stop at a West River Road GOP fundraiser
It was nothing new to the sleepy peninsula suburb of Rumson when 2012 Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney paid a visit to a private West River Road estate for a political fundraiser early Wednesday evening. "We've done it before," longtime Republican Rumson Mayor John Ekdahl said. "We had Dick Cheney here a few years back." Ekdahl, who was not planning to attend the event, said he was not at liberty to disclose the exact address, but he did say that there would be extra police patrols on duty on and around the property for the evening. Taking a ride down River Road, the extra patrols became obvious at a riverfront West River Road estate where American flags draped the front posts at the entrance gate and driveway and three …

We’ve included communities across New Jersey, so if you want to see what the campaign contributions in nearby towns are like, go right ahead. The information in the database was downloaded from the Federal Election Commission’s website. The data is based on quarterly reports, and is current through July. The probable Republican nominee for U.S. president attends a political fundraiser on Bernardsville mountain.
The actual event was a political fundraiser for state Sen. Joe Kyrillos, a Republican and Middletown resident who wants to replace Democrat Bob Menendez in the U.S. Senate, but the reason for all the security, traffic and reporters outside a private home in Bernardsville on Wednesday afternoon was the awaited arrival of Mitt Romney. Romney, the likely Republican nominee for this year's presidential race, arrived about an hour after the scheduled start of the $5,000-a-plate campaign event at the house of attorney Edward Deutsch. The Somerset County sheriff's department, with its canine unit, a few cars and officers from the Bernardsville police department and Secret Service had already secured the entrance to the home on Dryden Road prior …
