Sign of the Times at Little Silver Bottle Shop

Signs went up at the downtown liquor store this week for the first time since they came down for a building renovation in 1986.

When the building at the corner of Church Street and Prospect Avenue was renovated in 1986, all signage for the two businesses within was removed for the face lift to be completed. But while the sign above what's now Gianni's has hung atop the pizza spot for years, the space above the liquor store next store has remained empty for over 25 years. All that changed this week when a cherry picker arrived to hoist the new sign over Little Silver Bottle Shop, which changed hands this summer. "We're excited!" says owner and Little Silver resident Bill Kenney. "It's the first time in 27 years that we have a sign that indicates who we are and what we do." Since Kenney took over in July, the shop has started to accept credit cards and has reshifted …

PHOTO GALLERY: Why Little Silver Needs a Bar

A wine and cupcake sampling at the Little Silver Bottle Shop attracted a steady stream of hungry wine enthusiasts Saturday afternoon.

It wasn't just the vino that was flowing at the Little Silver Bottle Shop on Saturday afternoon for a wine and cupcake sampling. The event married three local businesses — Cupcakes of Little Silver, CorkMaven and the bottle shop — and created an overflow of neighborhood synergy. A steady stream of about 100 people eager to sample the four wines selected by CorkMaven, aka Kristy Niro, gathered in the back room to pair their sips with baby cupcakes created by Gabriella Bonocore and Susan Buchenberger of Cupcakes of Little Silver. Folks gathered around the sampling bar to hear Niro describe the nuances of selections like a hearty Italian Barolo or fruity sparkling California wine and pairing ideas. Pairing People With the Perfect Wine is CorkMaven's Business

Little Silver's Kristy Niro is turning a 20-year passion into a business.

Buying wine can be a tricky business. Between the vineyards and vintages, the reds and whites and the distractingly cute labels, it's tempting while in a shop or at a restaurant to latch on to the nearest Kendall Jackson and call it a day. Little Silver's CorkMaven, aka Kristy Niro, is making it her mission to help local wine lovers break out of their chardonnay box and give something new a try. "It makes me nuts to go out to dinner and sit and watch women just order a glass of pinot grigio or chardonnay," said Niro recently. "I want to help women drink better and order with confidence." Niro is turning her 20-year love affair with all-things vino into a wine consulting business and is teaming up with local shops to help wine buyers find …

Way to go Kristy! I am guilty of ordering a simple Chardonay while out, I too need to be educated! And one more Ben... "Wine is sure proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." ~Benjamin Franklin   more ›

Credit Cards Accepted at Little Silver Bottle Shop: Priceless

Life just got a little easier for those of us who have a hard time holding onto cash in our wallets.

If you are like me, you have a hard time keeping cash in your wallet. Somehow, the green slips of paper that the ATM spit out seem to vanish overnight, while trusty plastic credit cards are as ever present and long lasting as, well, plastic. So good news then for those of us who never had the greenbacks in our pockets to pick up cocktail fixings at the liquor store in town, which only took cash and checks. Until now. We were thrilled to stop into the Little Silver Bottle Shop on Friday and find a credit card reader just waiting to swipe our plastic and let us bring home a bottle of wine for the weekend. Owner Bill Kenney said the system was up and running on Wednesday and we can attest that we now have weekend cocktails, and 30 days to pay…

I love paying as little as possible for anything, especially my spirits. But it is also important to support our local merchants, and while I look forward to the price adjustments, a premium for convenience (more convenient than ever--credit cards, hours, Sunday!) is certainly reasonable.   more ›

Revamped Little Silver Bottle Shop to Expand Its Offerings

The store's new owner says he'll be introducing high quality wine and spirits, tastings and a system to accept credit cards in the coming weeks.

After almost 70 years of steady operation, some big changes are coming to Little Silver Liquors in the coming weeks as the store transitions under its new owner. Bill Kenney, who's lived in town since 2004, recently bought the Little Silver staple, which has been owned by the same family since its doors opened in 1944. Now dubbed the Little Silver Bottle Shop, the store will begin to offer an increased selection of wines and Kenney said he would concentrate on expanding the quality and value of what customers will find on the shelves. The store, which Kenney believes to be the oldest continually running retail establishment in Little Silver, was opened by Ralph Ribustelli who ran it until his son, Robert, took over about 30 years ago. "I'm…

Little Silver Liquors Changes Hands

The long-time family business has been purchased by a Little Silver resident.

Little Silver Liquors, the downtown staple since 1944, has been sold. According to a public notice posted on APP.com Saturday, an application has been submitted to the borough to transfer the liquor license from the long-time family owned business to a new owner. The sole shareholder, officer and director of Little Silver Liquors, Robert Ribustelli of Long Branch has transferred his entire interest to Little Silver resident William G. Kenney, according to the notice. The shop will now operate under the name Little Silver Bottle Shop. The notice indicates that the shop, located at 497 Prospect Ave., will continue to sell liquor, wine and beer. Patch stopped by Sunday afternoon and noticed work benches set up outside the store alongside a …
