The building suffered extensive damage during Hurricane Sandy.
Oceanport's post office, closed for over three months after Hurricane Sandy, could reopen within the next few weeks, according to Councilman Joseph Irace. "We just got word yesterday they are estimating two weeks," Irace posted on Facebook Tuesday. While mail delivery in the borough resumed shortly after the storm, the East Main Street branch had remained closed due to structural damage. According to Borough Clerk and Administrator Kim Jungfer last week, the building was "functionally ready" and the borough had been "actively communicating" with postal officials about replacing equipment and reopening as soon as possible. In the interim, operations and staff had been relocated to the Eatontown USPS processing and distribution center on …

A letter from Oceanport Councilman Joseph Irace: You have probably noticed that the redevelopment of Fort Monmouth has been back in the news with CommVault’s move out of Oceanport and into Tinton Falls. There have been a lot of glowing press releases issued by the Fort Monmouth Economic Redevelopment Authority (FMERA) and local and state officials. Each one of these press releases trumpeted the positive short and long term impact that this move will have on the Fort’s redevelopment and to the community at large. Indeed, the press releases spoke of the virtues of this move and the many thousands of jobs that would be created by CommVault as the result of its relocation from Oceanport to Tinton Falls. Depending on whose press release you …

"The entire system is broken and needs to be fixed," according to Councilman Joseph Irace.
Transcript from statement read at the Dec. 5 Oceanport Borough Council meeting by Councilman Joseph Irace: Tonight we are being "asked" under court order, to approve an affordable housing plan for the Borough of Oceanport for COAH Round 2. The entire debate on Affordable Housing is one that I have trouble understanding intellectually, socially and fiscally. While we all embrace the idea of lower priced homes, where newly married couples and our aging population can remain in our town for now and years to come, I have a hard time accepting the fact that the Courts, and not our legislature, have the ability to mandate how many homes and the type of homes that a municipality must provide. This is especially troublesome to me because the …

Residents found out this week that their long-time librarian is to be transferred to another branch.
Patch reporter and Oceanport resident Shannon Winning shared the following story with us: "Recently I spotted my childhood librarian in the grocery store, and though it had been at least 30 years since I last saw her, I knew instantly that it was her. Almost immediately, I was brought back to time she read me the Little Engine That Could and pretended not to see me eating all the Honeycomb cereal we were using for the wheels in our train craft." Memories like these are what make this week's news all that much harder to take. Oceanport residents learned this week that their long-time librarian is to be transferred next week to a new post and the news has plenty of residents up-in-arms on Facebook over the pending loss. "She's a part of the …

Oceanport councilman says the borough got "the short end of the stick" in the recent deal to move CommVault to Fort Monmouth property in Tinton Falls.
I’d like to take a few moments to talk about recent matters involving the re-development of Fort Monmouth. In particular the move of CommVault from Oceanport to Tinton Falls While there are many out there praising CommVault's move, I have no praise for this move at all. Simply speaking, taking jobs from Oceanport and relocating them to Tinton Falls leaves Oceanport short 550 jobs. It also leaves our second largest taxpayer with an empty building to fill and, it takes the consumer dollars of 550 employees from our local economy. Relocating the 550 workers who currently work at CommVault in Oceanport is just that – RELOCATION of jobs, not job creation. According to press releases by local politicians and FMERA, representations have been …

Borough officials focus on shared services rather than cuts to keep taxes in line.
Oceanport Councilman Joseph Irace seemed almost excited to announce at Tuesday's joint meeting between the council and board of education that there would be no increase in the borough's municipal tax rate in 2012. "This is not a haphazard zero increase," Irace, who chairs the borough's finance committee, told the audience of about 25 people at Maple Place School. "This is part of a five-year plan." The council will introduce the budget at its March 15 meeting and hold a public hearing on April 15 prior to adoption. According to a presentation on the budget given by Borough Administrator Kim Jungfer, the borough has taken several steps to minimize tax increases: Irace said that the borough's department of public works had come in under …

Councilman says he is "cynical at best" about state's ability to address matters at Monmouth Park and Fort Monmouth.
Councilman Joseph Irace updated residents about the situations at Monmouth Park and Fort Monmouth, two concerns critical to the future of Oceanport, at the Borough's reorganization meeting held at Borough Hall on New Year's Day. The above video features highlights from Irace's speech in which he implores the community to stay informed (though he did not mention them, Irace posts regular updates to the Oceanport Residents and Citizens Holding the Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority Accountable groups on Facebook) and stay vocal. Here is the full text of Irace's address: Good Afternoon and Happy New Year! Congratulations to Michael, Ellynn and Rick on their reelection to our Governing Body. Congratulations also to our Fire and …

Few "facts" you conveniently left out there councilman, 1. This privately owned company just spent ~16MILLION of it's own money to buy the land it's moving to, along with hiring in a time of suck and the stock going up over the last few years, I can see how you can be a negative nancy here.. 2. This company is merely a RENTER in the current building it occupies, meaning how much in property taxes…   more ›
