Report: Seastreak Captain Says Mechanics to Blame for Ferry Crash

Investigators plan to review damaged vessel today

The captain of the Seastreak ferry told federal investigators that mechanical problems are to blame for the Wednesday crash in Lower Manhattan, according to the Star Ledger. Capt. Jason Reimer, who has been identified as a local resident, told the National Transportation Safety Board Thursday that the vessel's controls "did not respond" when he approached Pier 1 from Highlands Wednesday morning. The ensuing crash left more than 70 people injured. "Both diesel engines shut off," National Transportation Safety Board member Robert Sumwalt told the newspaper.  The Seastreak was recently updated with new engines and a modified propulsion system, the paper reported. Report: Seastreak Ferry Captain a Local Resident

National Transportation Safety Board inspecting damaged vessel today

The captain of the Seastreak ferry, which crashed into a pier in Lower Manhattan Wednesday, has been identified as Jason Reimer of Red Bank, according to a report in the Star Ledger. Reimer and his crew passed alcohol tests after the crash, which left 74 commuters injured, the report stated. The National Transportation Safety Board planned to interview Reimer today and will complete a thorough inspection of the damaged ferry. James Barker, Seastreak's chairman, told the Ledger Reimer was a "great guy and a fine captain" who had been with the company for 10 years. The Asbury Park Press reports that property records show a Jason Reimer with a home in Middletown with a Red Bank mailing address. The ferry was transporting 326 passengers from …
