VIDEO: Celebrating Different Ways of Learning at Point Road School

The seventh annual Different Learners Day helps teach third graders to accept classmates who have different learning challenges.

Over the course of one day this week, Point Road third graders got to hear about what it's like living with cerebral palsy, how hard it is to shoot a basket with one arm and that having cochlear implants can be pretty cool. As part of the seventh annual Different Learners Day on March 14, students also got to meet and learn about seeing eye dogs, learn how difficult it is to maneuver in wheelchairs and how to say "giraffe" in sign language. "This day is great," said Julie Ford, the district's guidance counselor who helped organize the event. "But we want students to carry through these ideas into future situations." This is a wonderful thing for xhildren to see. It helps them realize they are fortunate to not have disabilities and also to never make fun of anyone that does. Agreat program!   more ›

PHOTOS: Celebrating Differences in Little Silver

Point Road School's third grade class got a taste for what life is like when you're faced with mental and physical challenges.

On Thursday, Little Silver third graders did what they normally do: they poured themselves a bowl of cereal, put on their sneakers and threw a ball around. But because this was a part of Point Road School's Celebrating Different Learning Abilities Day, the students discovered how tough these everyday, mundane tasks can be -- like zipping a sweatshirt and finding a matching pair of mittens -- when you are living with a mental or physical challenge. "It's so important for students to understand and accept all kinds of differences," said Dr. Pamela Albert-Devine, the school's principal. "Sometimes they have to experience it for themselves." Point Road Students are Daring to be Different [VIDEO]

Third graders at Point Road School get ready to spend Thursday participating in Different Learners Day.

Being different when you're a kid isn't easy, especially when you don't have any control over it. But at Point Road School, students are learning that even though someone in their class might not be able to see or has a harder time learning things, she still likes to hang out with friends and do lots of regular kid things. The 3rd grade will spend all day Thursday getting a feel for what it's like to live with some type of difference through participating in the sixth annual Different Learners Day. To prepare, the students were treated to an assembly on Wednesday featuring a performance by The Kids on the Block.
