As parents, we know that this is a busy time of year. There are new schedules to get used to, folders full of forms to fill out and homework, endless homework to monitor. As an added challenge, back to school nights crop up in the midst of all this adjusting, which take more of our time but remind us what all this busyness is really about. Here's the back-to-school night schedule for local schools this week: Wednesday, Sept. 19, 7 p.m., "New" Gym Thursday, Sept. 20, 7 p.m. Parents and guardians should come armed with their students' schedule, which can be found on Parent Portal. Parents and guardians of freshmen and transfer students are invited to an informational session in the Shore Regional High School Auditorium at 6:30 p.m. From the …

It was all about traffic control both inside and outside of Point Road on Thursday for the first day of school.

The first day of school over at Point Road, which Little Silver Police and school officials had been planning for all summer, hoping to allay traffic congestion due to the Seven Bridges Road closure, turned out to be pretty uneventful on Thursday. Except for the car fire. But that was small and put out quickly and slowed things down for about 20 minutes along Willow Drive. "Next week will be the true test," said Police Chief Daniel Shaffery, who was standing at the end of Little Silver Point Road near the giant "Bridge Out" sign and monitoring the flow of traffic early Thursday morning. "On the first day of school, everyone is coming early to park and take pictures." When parents start dropping off next week, said Shaffery, police will …
Traffic moved smoothly through town on the first day of school until a small car fire on Willow Drive backed vehicles up for about 20 minutes.

While Little Silver Police were developing a plan for the opening of the school year, they had a lot of factors to take into consideration. There's the Seven Bridges Road closure, new times for the start and end of the school day at both schools and the potential for traffic snarls throughout town as a result. Creating alternate plans in the event of a car fire along one of the main traffic thoroughfares through town might not have made the list of potential headaches. But on Thursday, as families began to head onto the roads to drop kids off at Point Road and Markham Place for the first day of school, a car fire at 7:55 a.m. on Willow Drive, between Amelia Circle and Lovett Avenue, backed up traffic for about 20 minutes until the vehicle …
The rain held off for a smooth start to a new school year.
"Welcome back!" Wolf Hill School Principal Melanie Lipinski said, greeting familiar faces as they stepped down giant bus steps and into a new school year on Thursday in Oceanport. Crossing guard Patty Scerbo was all smiles as she greeted her walkers. "It's a great way to start the day," she said of the job she has held for at least 12 years. "Their smiling faces, they're adorable." At Wolf Hill School, a gaggle of parents gathered at the pre-school/kindergarten entrance to take pictures, wave goodbye and maybe stifle a tear or two as their babies took a major step to big boy and big girl status. Several teachers and aides, including Mrs. Cadigan and Mrs. Birnbaum, were on hand to guide new students who gratefully grabbed their extended …
How are you getting the kids to Point Road or Markham for the first day of school?

The first day of school is usually tinged with a little anxiety. Did you get all the supplies on the list? Will everybody be able to get out of bed before 8 a.m.? And is it still OK to send Fritos for snack time? This year, we have another layer to add to first-day jitters with the closure of Seven Bridges Road for bridge repair bringing a new wrinkle to dropping off and picking up students in Little Silver. The Little Silver Police have been working with school officials to ensure that the flow of traffic through the borough doesn't come to a screeching halt twice a day as students are driven back and forth to school. Little Silver Police Chief Daniel Shafery issued an alert to Two River Alert subscribers on Wednesday outlining new …

For a lot of us moms, the looming first day of school for most of our kids this week means we have to snap out of that summer daze we've been in for the last few months and start paying attention to details, like have the kids eaten dinner and where are their sneakers. And we know that somewhere, we've gotten a letter in the mail or an e-mail detailing the schedule for this first, quick week of school, but darned if we can remember where it is and what it said. So, in an effort to help moms -- and lots of dads -- get everyone where they need to be and when, Patch has put together a listing of schedules for the first few days at local schools. We will not, however, be able to help you find any missing backpacks or pencil cases come Thursday…

This mom around town is planning back to school lunches and has some tips to share.
Back to school means back to packing lunches. Yikes! I have such a hard time coming up with new ideas. Peanut butter and jelly gets boring. Nutella has been a great backup especially paired with some strawberries, but that gets old too. Regardless, both options will be in my pantry for busy mornings but I need some more interesting solutions. Do you have any good lunch box ideas? I asked around and some other moms shared their tips with me. Elise S., a Cinnaminson mom of two, told me how she brightens up peanut butter and jelly or tuna sandwiches with a little trick. “I sometimes cut them into different shapes with cookie cutters or use a little gadget that cuts the sandwich into a circle with no crusts.” Kids love the “no crust” …

Want to know who's heading up what school sport or activity this year in Oceanport? We've got the list here.
The Oceanport Board of Education approved its list of extracurricular positions for the 2012-13 school year earlier this month. The list of teachers, who were recommended by the district's superintendent, who were approved to serve in various positions are as follows:

Matt Howell is not scheduled to start his new job in Oceanport until after the first day of school but that doesn't mean he hasn't been doing his homework.
Although Maple Place's new principal is spending his days at a Matawan school until his contract there expires in a few weeks, he's been making his way to Oceanport each afternoon to ensure everything is in place for the first day of school. "This is just an absolute fit," he says of his decision to bow out of a contract he signed in May to serve as assistant principal at Lloyd Road School in Matawan and head to Oceanport instead. "It was really a no-brainer," he says. Matt Howell, who comes to Oceanport after serving as principal at Lillian Drive Elementary School in Hazlet for two years, says it's his "strong middle school background" that makes him a right fit for the job. He was formally hired by the Oceanport Board of Education at its…

There were lots of teachers in blue shirts, explanations made by board members and comments from the public but in the end, there also was an approved agreement between the Oceanport Board of Education and the district's education association at the end of the Aug. 16 board meeting. The board of education approved the tentative agreement, signed between negotiating parties for the board and teachers on May 7, by a vote of 6-3 on Thursday night. Members Madeline Badalty, Mark O'Neill and Joan Osgoodby voted against the agreement. Before doing so, Badalty explained that her vote was not against the contract as much as it was intended to reflect her opposition to the negotiation process. "The way we, board members, conducted contract …
