The board needed to give a one-year notice if the contract was not to be renewed.
When Andrew Orefice was appointed Oceanport's superintendent in 2007, his three-year contract stipulated that it would roll over for another four years if the district did not give written notice, one year in advance, that he would not be reappointed. That one-year mark came and went in 2010 and so the contract automatically rolled over for renewal in July 2011 under the same terms and conditions. This past summer, Orefice signed a new contract with the district through 2015, which was the subject of a public hearing at last week's board of education meeting. (The contract, which has been posted on the district's Web site and available at the superintendent's office, can be found alongside this article.) "Did anyone know about the roll …

School Superintendent thinks that the district's schools could be "taken to a greater level."
Following a presentation to the public of the 2012-13 budget for the Oceanport School District on Thursday, an audience member asked Superintendent Andrew Orefice if he felt the district was "lacking" in anything, based on the lower-than-average per pupil costs. Orefice, who spent a good portion of the presentation touting the district's many accomplishments -- from solid testing scores and new security upgrades to the implementation of a regional curriculum and balanced literacy program -- did not hesitate in his answer. "We are," he told the audience of about 20 people at the Oceanport Board of Education meeting on March 22. "All of our accomplishments could be taken to a greater level." Orefice invited the district's two school …

H.E.R.O. program at Oceanport elementary school recognizes students and faculty who help, encourage, and respect others.
Monday's Oceanport Board of Education meeting recognized several Wolf Hill Elementary School students and faculty for demonstrating heroic behavior in the months of October and November. Wolf Hill Principal Melanie Lipinski explains: In the beginning of the year, we kicked off our theme of "Be a hero at Wolf Hill School" by discussing the meaning of an everyday hero. Being a H.E.R.O. means to help, encourage, and respect others. Each grade level selects one student each month and a faculty member to be designated as a "hero." Heroes are recognized at the monthly whole-school morning meetings with the entire school community as their supportive audience. We announce why the heroes are recognized, how they have helped, encouraged, and …

Lions' Club returns festival to its roots at Maple Place, will donate all proceeds directly to Oceanport school budget.
"Back to the future" and "more with less" are two phrases Oceanport Lion John Bonforte likes to use to describe this year's Strawberry Festival at Maple Place School, which he played a key role in coordinating. The annual rite of early summer, which since 1996 had been a larger event featuring carnival rides in the parking lot of Monmouth Park, returned to a simpler time and brought the community together in the more intimate confines of Maple Place's cafeterium. Working closely with Oceanport's Superintendent of Schools Andrew Orefice, Bonforte and the Lions Club offered an event complete with a dunk tank, moon bounce, face painting, baby chicks hatching, student projects on display, and of course, strawberries. "The kids are off the …
