RBR Team Sails to Victory at Battle of Monmouth Regatta

The varsity team came from behind after trailing CBA and RFH most of the day.

The Red Bank Regional varsity sailing team pulled off a come-from-behind victory in the Battle of Monmouth Regatta on Saturday, May 12 at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club in Oceanport, besting tough competition from 10 other teams and winning the event by a slim 1-point margin in the last race after trailing Christian Brothers Academy and Rumson Fair Haven HS most of the day. RBR was a model of consistency, taking the crown without winning a single race but never finishing worse than fourth in any of the 12 races. The RBR varsity team sailors were Kendall Van Winkle, Caroline Garth, Max Neubelt, Dominique Neubelt and Gabrielle Neubelt. The RBR freshman team of Derek Arnheiter, Robby Gearon and Andrew O'Brien finished a very …

I love to see competitive sailing for high schoolers. I wish I had that as a teenager. Congrats to RBR sailors and kudos to the SSYC crew for hosting.   more ›

PHOTOS: Monmouth Park Opening a Win-Win for Track and Fans

The racetrack's 67th opening day attracted fans old and new. Were you one of them?

Whether it was all the publicity recently over its new management or the perfect spring weather, Monmouth Park's opening day on Saturday saw an increase in attendance and wagering to kick off its 67th season. A little over 12,000 fans streamed into the Oceanport racetrack, which was an 11 percent gain over last year, according to a release. The Geller Family was looking for something to do and drove down from Long Island Saturday morning to spend the day at the track. Kelly Hogate of Sayreville said she hadn't been to the racetrack in about 10 years and brought her daughter Kaitlin, 17, to spend the day watching the races. Then there was Mike and Jennifer Sebastian who make the one-hour drive from Princeton every week during racing season …

What was the deal with the Mother's Day brunch? Both of my daughters left messages on the advertised reservation number and neither received a return phone call.   more ›

Red Banker's Moxie Ride Back on the Road. First Stop: Bike Haven

Ann Tardy, cyclist, entrepreneur and "exhausting" individual will kick off her next adventure Friday at Bike Haven. Stop by and you might win an iPad.

When you meet Ann Tardy, you will have no doubt that she is up for the challenge of a six week, 70-mile-a-day bike tour. Bubbly and genuine, Tardy talks not just with her hands, but with her whole body, as she shifts her weight from foot to foot with a little hop, reliving stories of the people she met the last time she jumped on a bike for a few thousand miles for what she has dubbed, the Moxie Ride. The last time it was from California to New Jersey to combine a lifelong dream of cross country cycling and a business built on motivating managers. Life Moxie is Tardy's company that teaches business leaders how to mentor their employees - through Tardy's own software, books and speaking engagements. She first hit the road in search of …

Tell Us: Did The New Configuration of the New Jersey Marathon Ease Traffic

Race began at Monmouth Park this year

The New Jersey Marathon brought thousands of runners and spectators to Long Branch, Oceanport and other shore towns this weekend. The influx of people created traffic on several roads including Route 36 and Ocean Avenue and caused the closure of other major roads. Patch wants to know if you think the move of the start of the race from Long Branch to Monmouth Park helped ease traffic and parking concerns in the area.

I ran the 1/2 marathon on Sunday and came from Neptune City. Traffic was horrific! It took one hour to get from Monmouth Mall to the parking area. Not enough police officers directing traffic, not enough staff in the parking lots. Just really terrible planning on behalf of the race directors. Don't get me started on the buses. There were three busloads of families/spectators that were to be …   more ›

New Jersey Marathon Has Another Banner Year

About 13,000 racers participate in 2012 race.

The many changes to the 2012 New Jersey Marathon including a new starting location and time, did not stop a huge number of runners and spectators from flocking to Oceanport and Long Branch on Sunday morning. About 13,000 participants enjoyed a perfect day and raced through the streets of several local towns as they raced to a finish on the Promenade in Long Branch. The race's new starting location of Monmouth Park eased parking and some traffic concerns for participants, and a shuttle service to and from the race track helped tired runners and spectators reach their destinations. Jason Page, of Durham, N.C., won the full marathon with a lightning fast time of 2:33:13. He finished first in a group of 2,304 runners. The half marathon, …

I ran the half marathon on Sunday, and while the actual race went well for me, what was happening with my family while I was running was unacceptable. My 3 yr old son, 5 yr old daughter, and my husband got on a school bus to head to the finish line to cheer me on and see me finish. That bus never made it. There were three buses filled with spectaters that were LOST and went to Colts Neck and …   more ›

SLIDESHOW: Little Silver PTO Takes a Taste of the Shore

Teachers and parents converged on the Shrewsbuy Sailing and Yacht Club in Oceanport to celebrate Cinquo de Mayo and night out without the kids.

The Little Silver PTO knows how to time a party. Saturday night's Taste of the Shore shindig the group threw at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club in Oceanport capitalized on a trifecta of party-worthy elements: Cinquo de Mayo, a big full moon and the Kentucky Derby. At around 8:30 p.m., Kasey Hyman -- who helped chair the event -- estimated there were about 140 people there. But as Patch was heading out around 10 p.m., it seemed like a lot more had arrived and joined the crowd outside on the deck drinking Skinny Girls and Coronas. We loved that the focus of the event wasn't putting tickets in baskets, but rather to enjoy a night out with friends in a beautiful setting. With no kids. Arriba.

NJ Marathon Street Closings in Oceanport

Check out the two race courses and what time to expect your road to close on Sunday for the race.

With the prospect of about 13,000 people streaming through the borough on Sunday morning, Oceanport officials and police have been busy getting the word out to residents about road closings for the NJ Marathon that kicks off this year at Monmouth Park. Streets should be shut down around 6:30 a.m., according to Capt. Dan Barcus, to accommodate the 6:50 a.m. start of the Long Branch Half Marathon and half marathon relay. He anticipated that by 10:30 a.m., all the runners should be out of Oceanport and the streets to be reopened. Oceanport Police Chief Harold W. Sutton estimated about 10,000 runners will wind their way about 5.5 miles through the borough from the racetrack to the finish line on the Long Branch promenade. The full marathon …

Tell Us: Should the Racetrack Continue to Hire Police to Regulate Traffic?

Local officials predict a "nightmare," according to a recent Asbury Park Press article.

A recent decision by Monmouth Park to stop hiring local police to help regulate traffic is viewed by many local officials as a "nightmare," according to an article in the Asbury Park Press. For decades, the race track would pay police to man traffic lights at several high traffic intersections to ease congestion and reduce the incidence of accidents, according to the article. Officials in Oceanport, West Long Branch and Eatontown received the notice from Monmouth Park about the decision, and say in the article that their departments don't have the funding to pay for the officers.

Maybe they can't get AC to subsidize that for them. Maybe someone should wake up and say the whole horse racing thing is over. It's been over for a long time. No one want to admit it though. To bad, it will just slowly go on doing its slow death and annoy the locals for a few more years.   more ›
