Study Shows Shore Regional and West Long Branch Should Share Superintendent

Districts most likely won't share a business administrator.

Shore Regional and the West Long Branch School District will likely share a superintendent after a recent study concluded that it would be the best course of action for the schools Both schools have interim superintendents, and the report concluded that they enter a shared service arrangement for that position. The school districts, along with Monmouth Beach and Oceanport, entered into an agreement with Puleio & Strimple Associates in January to conduct a study to advise their boards of future options for providing administrative services. The openings at Shore Regional and West Long Branch, combined with decreased aid and a down economy prompted the school boards to go ahead with the study in hopes of saving money and moving toward …

Memories: Holy Cross Mother's Day Tea

Author recounts special memories of the big social day at the school

An opinion piece by Teresa Makin, Holy Cross PTA: If there is one event that every Holy Cross mother cherishes from her child’s preschool days, it is the Mother’s Day Tea. There are few memories more poignant or special than the day her little boy or girl puts on his or her best clothes and best manners, to say thank you for all she does. Each year, four preschool classes spare no effort in creating a perfectly elegant tea in honor of their mothers. The children spend all week baking cookies and brownies, mixing iced tea, and preparing cucumber sandwiches for the celebration. Teachers Mrs. Jill Fulton, director, Miss Jeanne Marie Donahue, Mrs. Mary Sue O’Brien, and Mrs. Jennifer Tracy and their dedicated assistants teach the little ones …

Close to 1,000 Graduate From Monmouth University

Commencement speaker Mark Emmert wishes graduates well

It was a "day of great significance" for the 981 graduates of Monmouth University on Wednesday afternoon. Those were the words used by Monmouth University Board of Trustees Chairman Robert Sculthorpe as he addressed the crowd of graduates, parents and teachers who filled the PNC Bank Arts Center. "Remember you are Hawks and Hawks spread their wings and soar," Sculthorpe said. "You are the reason we do what we do." This year's commencement speaker was NCAA President Mark Emmert who said he was happy because he "got to be a member of the class of 2012." Emmert spoke of the importance of sports in students lives and said student athletes actually have higher graduation rates than those who are not student athletes. "Sports provide us with an …

Little Silver PTO Selects New Exec Board

The volunteers will manage the organization during the 2012-2013 school year.

The Little Silver PTO Executive Board for the 2012-2013 school year was voted in Monday night during the PTO General Session Meeting in the Markham Place School Media Center. The Board manages over 40 sub-committees who carry out the PTO's goals of fundraising, curriculum enrichment, providing teacher and administrative support, and organizing special activities for children in grades pre K-8.   “The Little Silver PTO has always been blessed with a strong number of volunteers, “ says Claire Harbeck Izzo. “One of our objectives next year is to keep that momentum going. We will be working throughout the summer to put a plan in place for the next school year that will balance our volunteer needs with ever-evolving demanding schedules of busy …

RBR Team Sails to Victory at Battle of Monmouth Regatta

The varsity team came from behind after trailing CBA and RFH most of the day.

The Red Bank Regional varsity sailing team pulled off a come-from-behind victory in the Battle of Monmouth Regatta on Saturday, May 12 at the Shrewsbury Sailing and Yacht Club in Oceanport, besting tough competition from 10 other teams and winning the event by a slim 1-point margin in the last race after trailing Christian Brothers Academy and Rumson Fair Haven HS most of the day. RBR was a model of consistency, taking the crown without winning a single race but never finishing worse than fourth in any of the 12 races. Oceanport BOE: Feasibility Study a Waste of Time and Money

Board members expressed disappointment with the outcome of a recent study to share school services with West Long Branch, Monmouth Beach and Shore Regional.

The "long awaited" feasibility study commissioned by the Oceanport Board of Education to examine shared services opportunities with West Long Branch, Monmouth Beach and Shore Regional was met with consternation by members at the May 10 meeting. "I think we were looking for things we hadn't considered," said Oceanport Board of Education President Colin Soyer about the report that concluded that Oceanport and Monmouth Beach were "less viable candidates for shared administrative services." "There were no eye-openers here," Soyer said, noting that most of the findings were "obvious." "We're back at square-one," he added. The four school districts entered into an agreement with Puleio & Strimple Associates in January to conduct a study to …

POLL: Are Student Secrets a Proper Test Question?

Marlboro recently completed its NJ ASK testing, and some parents weren't happy with the questions on the test.

The NJ ASK standardized testing is designed to test the general knowledge of state kindergarten through eighth grade students, but this year it also tested their ability to keep a secret. According to the Asbury Park Press, students in New Jersey reported to their parents that they were asked to reveal a secret in an essay portion of the test, and reveal why the secret was hard to keep. New Jersey Department of Education Spokesman Justin Barra confirmed with the Asbury Park Press that the "secret" question was on the test, but was not a part of the students' scores. But some parents, including Richard Goldberg of Marlboro, said he thinks the question was inappropriate. According to Barra, that question appeared in 15 districts as a "field …

PHOTOS: Teens Take Over Little Silver for the Day

Markham Place's annual Student Government Day gave students a taste of how Little Silver works.

Little Silver's mayor and council were looking a little younger on Wednesday morning, and it had nothing to do with new moisturizers or Botox. Markham Place's eighth grade students participated in the annual Student Government Day, when, for a few hours, each student was appointed to fill a spot on the borough's many committees and departments to get a feel for the inner workings of a small town. Little Silver Mayor Robert Neff, Jr. swore in student mayor John Salcedo and his classmates to fill the borough's council and administrator spots and then the new mayor appointed the rest of the grade to positions like librarian, tax collector and the planning board member. "All these organizations work together for the benefit of the town," Neff …

Who's Your Favorite Teacher?

Help us celebrate National Teacher Appreciation Week on Little Silver-Oceanport Patch.

“Every day I am asked what the secret is to ensuring every child in New Jersey graduates from high school ready for college and career, and I always have one simple response – outstanding teachers.” Those are the words of NJ Acting Commissioner of Education Christopher Cerf in a video address made available Monday on the state's website. “I began my career as a high school history teacher, and I can honestly say that I never worked harder or felt more rewarded than I did during those four years. We as a state should make sure that we celebrate outstanding educators every day for their work with our children and for developing the next generation of leaders.” In Little Silver and Oceanport, you can help celebrate local teachers who make a …

IN MEMORIAM: Don E. Merce

We will never forget that ordinary Tuesday morning when everything changed and we were reminded of how precious life is.

On the morning of May 6, 2008, I walked into my house from the gym to find my phone ringing in the kitchen. On the other end was another Little Silver mom, asking me if I had heard about the accident. I quickly hung up and called the school board office to confirm and rushed over to Markham to find a cluster of other mothers standing in the school's vestibule. We stood there, shell schocked, as our children were called out of their classrooms and fed out to us in the hallway. My girls, who were in 5th and 8th grade at the time, exploded through the doors and we all stood there with our arms around each other and cried -- for our principal, our school and ourselves and all that we had lost. Don Merce was a legend in Little Silver. Across …
