Opinion: CommVault's Move from Oceanport Relocates Jobs, Doesn't Create Them

Oceanport councilman says the borough got "the short end of the stick" in the recent deal to move CommVault to Fort Monmouth property in Tinton Falls.

I’d like to take a few moments to talk about recent matters involving the re-development of Fort Monmouth. In particular the move of CommVault from Oceanport to Tinton Falls  While there are many out there praising CommVault's move, I have no praise for this move at all.  Simply speaking, taking jobs from Oceanport and relocating them to Tinton Falls leaves Oceanport short 550 jobs.  It also leaves our second largest taxpayer with an empty building to fill and, it takes the consumer dollars of 550 employees from our local economy. Relocating the 550 workers who currently work at CommVault in Oceanport is just that – RELOCATION of jobs, not job creation.  According to press releases by local politicians and FMERA, representations have been …

Memories: Holy Cross Mother's Day Tea

Author recounts special memories of the big social day at the school

An opinion piece by Teresa Makin, Holy Cross PTA: If there is one event that every Holy Cross mother cherishes from her child’s preschool days, it is the Mother’s Day Tea. There are few memories more poignant or special than the day her little boy or girl puts on his or her best clothes and best manners, to say thank you for all she does. Each year, four preschool classes spare no effort in creating a perfectly elegant tea in honor of their mothers. The children spend all week baking cookies and brownies, mixing iced tea, and preparing cucumber sandwiches for the celebration. Teachers Mrs. Jill Fulton, director, Miss Jeanne Marie Donahue, Mrs. Mary Sue O’Brien, and Mrs. Jennifer Tracy and their dedicated assistants teach the little ones …

Cape May a Patch Favorite 'Staycation' Spot

Pier Village, Sandy Hook and Jenkinson's were right up there as well

Congratulations to Cape May, which emerged as the Patch favorite in this week's Reader's Choice survey of favorite "staycation" spots. Three runners-up, Pier Village in Long Branch, Sandy Hook and Jenkinson's Boardwalk in Point Pleasant Beach, came so close that we're declaring them Patch favorites as well. What do you get when you combine the summer vacation season with a tight economy? The "staycation." And in this part of the Garden State, the drive-to family fun spots abound, from Woodbridge and all the way down the Jersey Shore. This week's Readers' Choice survey asked you to vote for your Patch favorites, the places to bring the boyfriend or girlfriend, or the family and grandparents - when cash and time are too short for the plane …

Letter: Maple Place Principal's 'Begging' Pays Off

Cory Radisch thanks parents and guardians for supporting his NJASK attendance efforts.

To the parents/guardians of 7th and 8th grade students: Please accept my sincere gratitude for making sure your children were up and ready to go for NJ ASK testing this entire week. Incredibly, we had 100% attendance all four days of testing.  This is the first time witnessing 100% attendance during testing in my career.  Thanks again for your partnership and your commitment to education.   Regards, Cory

POLL: Are Kids Getting Priced Out of Baseball and Softball?

A NY Times article explores the era of the $250 baseball bat

Have you bought a baseball glove for your Little Leaguer lately? Did you pay more than $100 for it? How about a $250 bat? A New York Times story headlined "Big Price Tags Attached to Even the Littlest Leagues," looks at the big business of equipping youngsters for participation in youth baseball and softball leagues, quoting those costs and more. "A batting helmet protects tiny heads for $39.99," the Times reports. "A pair of Nike Jordan Black Cat cleats will make your child fast and fashionable at $51.99 until he or she outgrows them." So what do you think? Has the cost of bats and gloves taken our kids too far from the simpler days of sandlot and playground ballgames? Or have you had better luck finding more modestly-priced equipment for…

I have coached multiple years of baseball and softball and these prices are off base. A decent youth glove runs about $35 (Louisville Slugger, Mizuno) and you can find serviceable gloves for around $25 (Wilson). IMO the best youth gloves are in the $60-$70 range (Rawlings, Slugger, Mizuno, Wilson) and should last multiple seasons. Youth Cleats are $20 to $35 for (Nike, Mizuno, NB, Under Armour). …   more ›

Home and Garden

Easter Decorations Decoded

Bunnies, colored eggs, and bouquets of flowers adorn your home for the holiday of Easter, but why?

When thinking about decorating your home for the Easter holiday the mind goes to bright pastels, fresh flowers, baskets full of colorful eggs, chicks and bunnies. Ever wonder how baby animals, eggs, and a mythical bunny became a part of this Christian holiday? While Easter is a celebration of Jesus Christ's resurrection, it has also evolved over centuries to include pagan traditions.  The name Easter is derived from the Anglo-Saxon goddess of spring, Eostre. The month of April was dedicated to Eostre, and the festival of Eostre was celebrated on the vernal equinox, the one day of the year when the hours of sunlight equal the hours of darkness. When English Christians were trying to convert others to their religion, they kept the name of …

Did you know that the date for Easter is determined by the lunar cycle? Look it up. PS. You can no longer use the term "Easter Bunny" in Holmdel. He is known here as "The Rabbit" and the former terminology, "Easter Egg Hunt" has been replaced by "Eggomania!" Let's be careful here! Easter Egg Hunt and Easter Bunny are only allowed to be used by the Obama Administration and the White House staff! …   more ›

In My Daughter's Eyes, A Story of Autism

An editor's personal journey.

This story is not mine to own. It could belong to you. It could belong to your sister, your friend, your neighbor, the waitress at Jersey Boys, the bank president, the school principal, the police officer directing traffic.  In New Jersey, the story belongs to all of us. The findings of a federal study released last week show that one in 49 children, and one in 29 boys, are diagnosed with autism in New Jersey. Nationally, one in 88 children are diagnosed annually.  Autism is a disease that gives itself freely and without prejudice. There is no way to protect your child from it; no diet or vaccine that will prevent it. It is, as experts will tell you, pervasive. Autism has been an unwanted guest in my house for 11 years. It has attached …

Want a Real Easter Bunny? It's a 10-Year Commitment

A cuddly rabbit shouldn't be a hastily-decided Easter gift, says Sara Wuillermin Moreno a volunteer who works with rabbit rescue organizations.

With Easter quickly approaching, many families seek the perfect gift to give their loved ones and children. An appealing option always seems to be a pet rabbit—what better way to celebrate the Easter Bunny than a fluffy friend of your very own? Unfortunately, many times the decision to purchase a rabbit is done in haste and new owners realize quickly these animals (whose lifespan is generally six to ten years) take more care and attention than most new owners are willing to give. It is estimated that the amount of rabbits abandoned at shelters greatly increases following the Easter holiday. This ends up leading to an influx of rabbits being neglected, improperly cared for, left at animal shelters, or, worst of all—let out into the wild, an…

5 Things You Need to Know Today: Thursday, March 29

A hodgepodge of events and useful information for the folks of Little Silver and Oceanport.

Keeping it cool: Kiss Tuesday's clouds good bye today because the sun will gradually boss its way through on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures look to stay in the low 50s today and tomorrow. The forecast for Saturday is starting to turn a little sketchy, which is bad news for those of us who have threatened our children with untold emotional and social consequences if they do not help clean out our scary messy garage that day. I am conviced that a family of five could be living in a corner of the garage, cleverly obstructed by pool toys and sports equipment, and need to be ferretted out. Pronto. Crime 101: Patch had a great conversation with Little Silver Police Chief Dan Shafferty on Wednesday about the …
