Point Road Students Go Green at Sickles Farm

Little Silver Point Road Green Team and courtyard gardeners walked to Sickles Market Farm for a tour of the local produce being grown followed by a luncheon back at school's courtyard.

The conclusion of the fourth year of Little Silver Point Road School’s Green Team meant a walk down to the farm – Sickles Farm, that is.  Bob Sickles, a staunch supporter of the school’s green efforts over the years, suggested we visit his dad’s “mini farm” so the children could experience first-hand the local produce being grown in town.

When we arrived at Sickles Farm, the troop of 22 students literally ran to meet up with Mr. Sickles, eager to view the farm.  After our tour, we walked back and enjoyed lunch in the Point Road Courtyard.  The featured dish was a green salad made of lettuce harvested from plants donated last month by Sickles Market and grown right in the school’s courtyard.  More lessons from Mr. Sickles on lettuce types, root systems, photosynthesis, and a first-look at the newly planted sensory gardens.

All in all, I’d say the kids had a blast – (maybe as much as Principal Pamela Albert-Devine but I doubt that)!   Thanks so much for all the support from the Point Road secretaries, teachers, custodians, parents, Dr. Albert-Devine and of course to Mr. Sickles.  There’s nothing like a day at the farm to bring the school year to a close.
