The George Sheehan Classic came to Red Bank 1994 after the death of avid runner, author, philospher and Red Bank physician Dr. George Sheehan.

The Sheehan family announced prior to the race that they are releasing a book in 2014 honoring Dr. Sheehan's life 20 years after his death.
