Monmouth Announces 2012 Sports Hall of Fame Inductees

Hall of Fame Induction Dinner set for Friday, Nov. 2

The Monmouth University Sports Hall of Fame has announced the inductees chosen for the class of 2012.

The class of 2012 includes John Blair '81, basketball; Deborah Renz Farrell '76, swimming; Edward Hendricks '87, track & field and cross country; James McIntyre '72, basketball; Dawn Marino Smith '95, softball; and Amy DeValue Stainton ’96, soccer.

The Monmouth University Sports Hall of Fame 2012 Induction Dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2, in historic Wilson Hall. Dinner tickets are $95 per person. Call the Office of Alumni Affairs at 732-571-3489 to make reservations.

In addition, inductees will be honored in a halftime ceremony during the Hawks’ football game on Nov. 3 when Monmouth hosts Central Connecticut State University. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.

John Blair, a two-time team captain of the men’s basketball team, scored 1,087 points for the Hawks from 1977-81. In 1981, he was the sixth-round draft pick of the New York Knicks. He was named MVP of the New Jersey State All-Stars Senior Men’s Basketball Tournament in 1981. In addition, he is a three-time Big Apple Conference Champion and was named to NCAA Division II All-Tournament Team.

Deborah Renz Farrell, a nine-time All-American swimmer, set the American record in the 200 meter free relay at AIAW swimming nationals in 1976 and set a national collegiate record in the 50 meter freestyle at AIAW swimming nationals in 1974. She was named Monmouth Athlete of the Year in 1974.

Edward Hendricks was the Vitalis Olympic Invitational Collegiate IC4A 1500 meter Champion in 1987 and a U.S. Indoor National Qualifier in the 1000. He owned twelve Monmouth program records in cross country and track and field upon graduation and was named Monmouth College Male Athlete of the Year two times. He is a nine-time team Most Valuable Performer and ran equivalents of 4:05 and 4:07 miles in 1987.

James McIntyre ranked 13th all-time in scoring with 1,411 career points in Monmouth men’s basketball history and led the team to four conference championships. He is all-time program leader with 1,420 career rebounds and three-time NAIA District 31 Champion.  He was named first-team all-conference basketball player three times.

Dawn Marino Smith was the 1995 Northeast Conference Softball Player of the Year and All-Conference first baseman. She was named two-time team MVP in 1994 and 1995 and Monmouth’s single-season record holder in base hits (83) and runs scored (57). She ended career as Monmouth leader with 212 hits, registered a .379 career batting average, and held stolen base record (83) for 14 years. She was record holder in eleven offensive categories upon graduation.

Amy DeValue Stainton was a three-time all-state selection and a first-team All-Northeast Conference soccer player. She ranks second on Monmouth’s all-time scoring list with 153 career points and second all-time with 64 career goals. She is tied for school-record with four goals in a single game. She was an All-Region player in 1993 when she ranked third in the nation in scoring. She was a member of the 1995 NEC Tournament Champions and ECAC Champions in 1994.
