Protestors Gather Outside Point Road School Construction Site

By Christopher Sheldon

People who have driven by Little Silver's Point Road School over the last week have likely noticed protestors and a giant inflatable rate around the construction area for the school's new kindergarten classrooms.

Little Silver Board of Education President Chris Smith said they protestors are members of UA Local 9, a plumbers and pipefitters union that is upset they weren't used by the construction company hired to build the kindergarten classrooms.

Smith said Rampart was not required to use union workers for the construction and were only asked to pay prevailing wages.

"We're working with the construction company to come up with an equitable solution," Smith said. "We don't like to see picketers in the area around the school, so we are urging them to take care of it."

Smith said the picketers have not been at the school for the last three working days, but has not heard of a resolution to the union situation.

Smith said the construction of the classrooms remains on schedule to be completed by August.
