Point Road Students are Daring to be Different [VIDEO]

Third graders at Point Road School get ready to spend Thursday participating in Different Learners Day.

Being different when you're a kid isn't easy, especially when you don't have any control over it. But at , students are learning that even though someone in their class might not be able to see or has a harder time learning things, she still likes to hang out with friends and do lots of regular kid things.

The 3rd grade will spend all day Thursday getting a feel for what it's like to live with some type of difference through participating in the sixth annual Different Learners Day.

To prepare, the students were treated to an assembly on Wednesday featuring a performance by The Kids on the Block. The program used puppets to highlight physical and mental differences and encouraged students to ask questions about what it's like being different.

On Thursday, students will rotate through five areas of "differences" for 40-minute periods throughout the day during the event that is organized and run by about 50 parent volunteers.

In each area, the students will learn facts about people who are visually, physically, learning, developmentally or hearing impaired as well as how these differences impact a person’s day to day life.  The hands-on approach – children access doorways in wheelchairs, hear sounds with earplugs in, and perform tasks with blindfolds on - teaches children empathy and compassion for others.
