Oceanport BOE Candidate Profile: Joan Osgoodby

Osgoodby, a Sea Bright resident, is the one incumbent running for a three-year term.

PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL STATUS
Joan Osgoodby is the President of Advanced Marketing Solutions located in Sea Bright, N.J. The company specializes in web design and development, search engine optimization, lead generation, and marketing. She studied at Maple Place School; Shore Regional; Ramapo College of New Jersey; and Monmouth University. Joan currently lives in Sea Bright, and has three children.

BOARD EXPERIENCE
Osgoodby, seeking a second term on the K-8 school board, is the only candidate from Sea Bright. If re-elected, not only will she be the sole board member from Sea Bright, she will be the only female and mother serving on the nine-member board. Tongue-in-cheek, Osgoodby jokes that her campaign slogan will be “Every Board Needs a Broad.”  On a serious note, Osgoodby believes diversity, balanced representation, and experience are important to Oceanport and Sea Bright voters, and she hopes voters will take the time to find her name on the ballot and vote for her.

In her first term, Osgoodby served on the Finance Committee and was instrumental in achieving a zero percent tax increase on the 2012-13 budget to the taxpayers of Oceanport, and more than $100,000 decrease to the taxpayers of Sea Bright – and did so without increasing class sizes, or cutting any programs or jobs.

Osgoodby also served as Chair of the Community Relations Committee. Her priority has been to improve transparency and communications with all stakeholders: specifically by recording and posting more detailed meeting minutes to the public; and utilizing the full capacity of the district website  to support the staff, communicate with the public, cultivate parental involvement, and improve student achievement.

MORE CIVIC ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Joan spearheaded the development of the off-leash dog park located on Crescent Place in the Wolf Hill Recreation area of Oceanport. After her initial request was denied by the Monmouth County Parks System (MCPS), she lobbied for 18 months before getting approval. Not only did the MCPS finally approve the project, it granted almost $200,000 to build it. The park is currently open and enjoyed by many people (and their beloved dogs) from surrounding communities.

Joan founded the Sea Bright Business Alliance (SBBA). She is also a member of the Sea Bright Public Relations Committee, which helps streamline communication between the Borough of Sea Bright and the residents and business community. She’s the current Editor of the Sea Bright SeaBreeze, a quarterly newsletter publication that keeps residents updated on Borough news and events. She also served as a member of the Sea Bright Recreation Committee for more than five years.
