O' Pioneers: Maple Place Students Go Back in Time

Cathy Kornek's fifth grade class got to see first hand tools used by pioneers over 150 years ago.

Former physical education teacher Donald Brocklebank has gone from focusing on strong bodies to solid wood since he retired a few years ago.

He came back to the middle school last week to show fifth grade students the assortment of tools he's crafted from various woods that are reproductions of implements used by pioneers over 150 years ago.

Teacher Cathy Kornek said that this is the third year Brocklebank has spent a day meeting with her social studies classes, which piggybacks onto the pioneer unit she's presented to the students all spring.

Kornek said that Brocklebank gives similar presentations for the county park system.

Patch stopped by last Thursday morning to watch as students sat on the grass and listened to Brocklebank, dressed in period costume, explain what the tools were used for and how they were made.

"It's a great way to end the year," Kornek said.
