Local Schools Keep an Eye on Hurricane Sandy

Little SIlver and Red Bank Regional school officials are taking a wait-and-see approach before closing next week.

Superintendents from Little Silver and Red Bank Regional school districts issued statements on Friday that they are closely monitoring the track of Hurricane Sandy before deciding whether to close next week.

"The weather will dictate these decisions," wrote Little Silver Superintendent of Schools Dr. Carolyn Kossack in a letter posted on the district's Web site on Friday.

If the district needs to close, Kossack said, bulletins would be issued through Two River Alert System and posted on the district Web site.

It a state of emergency is declared, Kossack said the district would close. But even without that designation, the superintendent said schools might have to be closed due to flooding or power outage. Kossack said a variety of scenarios could occur -- from early dismissal Monday to delayed opening on Tuesday -- but that depends on the track of the storm.

RBR Superintendent Dr. Jim Stefankiewicz posted a message on the district's Web site on Friday that "no decision has been made regarding the operation of school on Monday."

We will be in communication with local emergency management officials throughout the weekend. We believe that by Sunday we will have a clearer understanding of the potential impact of the storm on our area," he wrote.

If closings or shortened days were necessary, Stefankiewicz said alerts would be posted through the following outlets:

"Please plan for the worst, but hope for the best," finished Kossack.
