Leaders at Shore Get Practical Experience From Oceanport Mayor Mahon

Mahon spoke at Shore Regional's Student Leadership Awards last week, and went over three styles of leadership and how he uses each in governance.

On Wednesday, May 18, held their annual Student Leadership Awards to recognize students who have carried the flag for various organizations in the school.

Oceanport Mayor Michael J. Mahon was invited to speak to the group of young leaders, and he presented them with a short lesson on leadership.

"Academics have studied leadership for centuries and describe leadership styles in three basic categories," began Mahon, who went on to list the authoritative, inclusive, and delegative styles of governance, along with the benefits and pitfalls of each approach.

Mahon said that in his experience serving the citizens of Oceanport, he uses all three styles, and makes a determination on which to use based on the given situation.

"In many situations, you must lead by delegating authority and responsibilities to meet the team goals," explained Mahon. "Two examples where this approach is working are the closing of Fort Monmouth and the privitization of racetrack.

"In each of these situations, people with expertise and knowledge are called upon for their advice and their experience. I'm not the expert on land use, or planning, or horse racing, but identifying people that are and utilizing their collective talents and experience helps us to achieve our goals."

To open the evening's program, David Smolokoff and Chelsea Amoroso sang "Star Spangled Banner"
