Dry Cleaner Helps Oceanport Schools Do "More With Less" [VIDEO]

Wolf Hill parent Kevin Kang washed all the district's athletic uniforms for free and wants to give back to the community even more.

Many public schools across New Jersey have suffered state aid cuts in recent years, but in Oceanport, people like Kevin Kang are working to ensure that local children get the same high quality education other students have received in the past.

Kang, the father of two children attending , recently saved the Oceanport school system approximately $700 by washing all of their athletic uniforms for free at his business, Sands Dry Cleaners, located in Ursula Plaza in Long Branch.

"Both my kids go there and I wanted to give back. It's a very family-oriented school so I wanted to get involved. I love the school," said Kang.

Oceanport resident , who owns a few doors down from Sands Cleaners, suggested to Kang that he could use his business make a difference.

"Since I own the Cleaners, [he said] maybe I could clean some uniforms or anything that had to do with clothes cleaning," said Kang.

A Korean immigrant, Kang came to the United States when he was 13 and was raised in New York. He and his family moved to Sea Bright three years ago.

Bonforte has been asking local people like Kang to do "More with Less" since he presented the initiative to Oceanport Superintendent Andrew Orefice and Board of Education President Kelly McGowan over a year ago.

"What it does is solicit the time, talent and treasure of individuals who feel they'd like to give more back to the school than just the tax dollars that the town takes for education," said Bonforte.

Bonforte said the idea of the greater community partnering up with the school system to do "More with Less" resulted from New Jersey budget cuts that challenged districts like Oceanport to maintain their quality of education with fewer funds.

It's a simple idea, says Bonforte, and one he believes can be successful in other New Jersey towns and on a national level. Bonforte said he would like Gov. Christie and President Obama to come to Oceanport to see how it works.

"We're going to invite both of them and see who responds first," said Bonforte.

The Lions' Club at was one of the first "More with Less" activities, with proceeds of $2,500 donated directly back into next year's school budget. Many area businesses donated their products to the festival, with Bonforte highlighting Joe Caputo of Caputo's Bakery (also located in Ursula Plaza), who contributed the event's cake and cream.

Plans are also in the works for , with Executive Director Michael Gianforte demonstrating real-world applications of things students have learned in their science classes.

Kang said he would like to continue contributing to the effort in any way he can.

"When I asked Mr. Bonforte if I can do anything for the school system, it wasn't just a one time thing. I want it to be an ongoing thing. I would love to do it. Anything I can do to help out the school system and community, I'll gladly do it," Kang said.
