RBR Student Pursues Twin Passions: Bowling and Language

Evan Lloyd of Little Silver a standout in the classroom and on the lanes

Red Bank Regional High School will graduate its first male four-year varsity bowler this spring who's distinguished himself in the classroom and the lanes.

Evan Lloyd of Little Silver, who has been playing the sport since age 2, is the bowling squad's captain and took second place this December in the South Jersey Singles Classic tournament in Lakewood.

"I wanted to bowl well to honor Albert Martin and felt he was supporting me in the tournament," LLoyd said in reference to the RBR student who tragically died in December after collapsing at a basketball scrimmage.

LLoyd also bowled in the Junior Bowlers Tour and earned a spot to compete in the Junior Gold Nationals to be held in Detroit in July.

In addition to his passion for bowling, Lloyd, a member of the International and Cultural Studies Academy, has an intense fondness for etymology, the history of languages and formation of words.  While he takes Italian, French and Spanish at RBR and earned spots in the latter two subjects' national honor societies, he also taught himself Portuguese. For the past two summers, he has parleyed his own knowledge of the language to study at the University of Lisbon in Portugal, where he earned certificates in the Portuguese language and culture.

This year, his foreign language fervor has prompted him to undertake the self-study of three additional languages, Gaelic, Greek and German.

Thus far, Lloyd has gained entrance to his two top college choices, George Mason University and the Indiana University at Bloomington, which both offer him the ability to pursue his two passions of world language and bowling.

Lloyd hopes to either teach language or work in the field of language translation and interpretation.
