Student Contest Provides Art for Monmouth Day Care Journal

The Monmouth Day Center’s annual major fundraiser, an art journal packed with the ads of community business supporters, has a unique process for creating their journal’s art—utilizing the talent of area school children.  Each year, the Monmouth Day Center Board sends out requests to Monmouth County schools to provide art work for their thirty-plus page journal. This year, 72 ads were selected among 1200 submissions from 13 schools. Three grand prizes were awarded for each school category including: Elementary--Kaylie Wiley, Rumson Country Day School; Middle School-- Amanda Crawford, St. James; High School—Jazmin Flores Paz, Red Bank Regional (RBR). RBR had the most art selected than any other school with 10 including the Grand Prize.  RBR’s other winners included: Morgan Grant, Liam Smith, Daniel Cabrera, Jonathan Carchi, Niki Buechel, Andrews James Drzewiecki, Darek Mucha, Pieter Quakenbush and Sebrina Lewin. All students study with RBR art teacher, Barbara Beckett who has participated in the program since its inception nearly 20 years ago.

She states, “I utilize the contest as a lesson in advertising and an opportunity for our students to learn about the day care center and its value to our community.”

Monmouth Day Care was founded in 1969 as a non-profit institution to help fill the need for child care in the Red Bank area.  It is among only 8% of day care centers in the state of New Jersey that receives accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children. It serves children six months to six years of age. The majority of its tuition comes from state scholarship and subsidy and it, therefore, relies on fundraisers such as the art journal to supplement its operation.
