RBR Cyber Technology Students Place Fifth in Global Competition

Red Bank Regional (RBR) Academy of Technology (AOIT) students have continually and consistently scored high on local, regional, state and national technology competitions, particularly in the vitally important area of cyber technology.  Recently, a team from RBR consisting of juniors Tyler Birn, Red Bank, Zachary Carrano, Little Silver, Louis DiOrio, Union Beach, Mark Eulner, Shrewsbury, Josh Even, Shrewsbury and  Cris Sochacki, Union Beach, have added a new level to RBR  AOIT achievements –that is global! The team finished fifth out of 72 high school teams worldwide in the 2013 Cyberlympics Challenge. The top six teams were honored as the top high school global scorers.

The competition was particularly challenging as it took place over the summer, when school was out and between teacher advisors Mandy Galante’s and Jeremy Milonas’ vacation weeks.  The students met in their technology classroom working together through three levels of competition over three days and 20 hours. The competition started with a digital forensics challenge where the students were given a flash drive and asked to extract evidence. The challenges got progressively harder up to the final challenge of having to secure eight computers while being attacked in a live environment.

RBR Cyber Teams coach Mandy Galante states that this group of students, which was first assembled for the summer competition, will be part of the new dream team for this competition year.  “While team members had experience in digital forensics, what was even more impressive, all of them were competing for the first time at the cybersecurity level.  With new recruits like these, the RBR CyberTech teams can expect to bring home more trophies in the upcoming year, perhaps one with a Universe title!”
