Woodbine Ave. trees to be resurfaced, removed and replaced

What you missed at the Little Silver Shade Tree Commission meeting on Feb. 22, 2011.

The Little Silver Shade Tree Commission will replace the sixteen diseased trees on Woodbine Ave. whose roots have lifted sidewalks and curbs, causing significant damage. As part of the borough-wide project, which is expected to break ground before May, the committee will plant twenty small, deep-root trees following the replacement of all sidewalks and curbs. Shade Tree Commission member John Heidema was assigned to oversee the project at last night’s meeting.

Also at the meeting:

  • The committee announced “Trees of Little Silver,” a photo project that invites residents to submit pictures of “outstanding and remarkable” trees around town for inclusion on the municipal website and a photo collage to appear in the front lobby of Borough Hall. “Like the Great American Bird Watch, we have the Great American Tree Watch,” said member Linda Goff, who proposed the idea and will spearhead the project. If you’d like to contribute to the project, e-mail Linda Goff at littlesilvernews@verizon.net.
  • The Borough of Little Silver has asked the committee to continue planting flowers and plants around borough quarters and the library. The Little Silver Garden Club was originally commissioned for the project, but vacated upon concerns regarding long-term upkeep and inconsistent watering patterns. Although the borough has a sprinkler system, the Commission will plant small perennial scrubs, in lieu of annuals, as they require less watering and generally have a longer lifespan. The Garden Club will continue to plant foliage around the Little Silver train station.
  • Heidema made a formal request to the Public Works Department that they pick up the trees that have fallen on the Parker Pet Trial across from Sickles Market.
  • The Little Silver police department requested the committee’s help in coordinating this year’s Memorial Day parade route. Frank Carmody, also a member of the Little Silver Traffic Safety Committee, will serve as point person for the task.

The Little Silver Shade Tree Commission encourages and oversees arborculture, with responsibility for the regulation, planting and care of shade and ornamental trees and shrubbery on any municipal property, public highway, park or parkway in the Borough, including their planting, trimming, care and protection.
