Timber! Trees Targeted for Removal in Little Silver

The borough will take down 14 trees in "dangerous condition" this fall.

The sound of a gunning chainsaw should be filling the air in certain Little Silver neighborhoods this month as 14 borough-owned trees in "dangerous condition" are slated for removal, according to Linda Goff, chairperson for the borough's Shade Tree Commission.

"These trees are really dangerous," Goff said at the Sept. 10 Little Silver Borough Council meeting, "especially with storm season approaching."

The outgoing trees are located as follows:

  • North Lovett Avenue
  • Rumson Road (near Rustic Terrace)
  • Silverside Avenue (near Bernard Terrace)

A few trees will also be pruned along Little Silver Parkway, said Goff.

The borough-owned trees are either diseased, dead or growing into overhead wires. When North Lovett was widened some years ago, Goff said construction crews simply hacked into the roots of the Silver Maples lining the street, which weakened the trees over time.

With all of the wires crisscrossing overhead throughout town, Little Silver "is not a street tree town," said Goff.

She told the council that the commission had been monitoring the trees for "several years, but hadn't had the money for removal."

The shade tree commission hopes to replace the trees, where it makes sense, next year, but for now, "We're all out of money," said Goff.

It is a shame that Little Silver "is not a street tree town." There are so many lovely, tree-lined towns of similar age in New Jersey most of which seem to have high real estate value. If these trees damaged over time by poor care must come down I would at least hope that going forward contractors, PW employees, and utilities are required to respect the remaining old trees making them a priority and protecting them as workers go about providing modern conveniences, even if doing so is less convenient for the workers.

"We're all out of money."
Maybe we're out of money because we are building a concession stand at the Markham place fields.

Liz ,having "high" property values serves no purpose other than for our politicians to pick our pockets with ever raising property taxes .We are now seeing this ever myth of rising values = higher taxes ...we have all seen our home values fall over 20% have our taxes which are supposed to be biased on values .Hence why we are now going through a revaluation .just another way to pick taxpayers pockets .Our property wealth is a illusion at this point ,we all could live in a very desirable neighborhood but when people don't have good jobs to pay high prices it's gone ..all except our highest in the nation property taxes .After living in my home over 30 years I have now paid more in taxes than I paid the seller ...so just where have high values got us ......only when we sell but now the question is to who?

You are so right MG. Its not too late to cancel the concession street stand. By the time they sell enough hot dogs to pay for it, it will be ready for demolition. I would like to see proof that this project was requested by residents, and who these residents were. The baseball fields are quite literally within walking distance from everyone in Little Silver. Resident baseball fans can continue to walk home if they are hungry or carry a snack as they do now, or walk across the street and buy a slice of pizza or a bagel from professionals that know how to run a business for profit. When the inevitable roach or mystery "tummy ache" occurs that will be the end of parents buying anything there. Additionally, it is probably illegal, and certainly unethical, for the Village to compete with the local vendors which form a significant part of the Village tax base.

OH Mongooch ....you might be out of money ,but that is of little concern to our politicians because they will never be out of our money to spend

Every dollar the the the municipalities spend and for what, should publicly available to review on the web in detail.

The new building alongside borough hall will also provide restrooms for the two fields back there and storage for recreation and the police department.

I had my car repaired at Collex and they were a fantastic collision company to deal with. They wereRead More understanding, professional and after the work you could not tell the car was ever damaged. I highly recommend them. PR
