State Considering Dredging Shrewsbury River

Residents are being asked to call DEP to say they are in favor of the project.

By Christopher Sheldon

Oceanport Councilman Joseph Irace announced on the Oceanport Residents Facebook page that the state is considering dredging the Shrewsbury River.

Irace said residents who wish to see the project move forward should contact Christine Schell of The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection at 609-292-0149 or christine.schell@dep.state.nj.us as soon as possible.

"As with any conceptual government project people have to speak out to get it rolling," Irace said. "There is a need for not just our municipal officials and political representatives, but anyone and everyone who wants the dredging done to have their voice heard and be on the record."

Irace said Hurricane Sandy has "really impacted the river which is used by numerous residents and visitors for recreation."

He said the opportunity for private entities to "piggyback on the State’s dredge project," is also being explored.
