Silverton Avenue speeding, crosswalks among Little Silver traffic concerns

In last night's meeting, the Little Silver Traffic & Safety Committee addressed resident concerns regarding school-zone speeding and a lack of pedestrian crosswalks.

Traffic safety is always an ongoing concern for the residents of Little Silver. Every other month, a committee is held by Chairman Frank Carmody, Vice Chairperson Chip Connell, Council Representative David Gilmour, and retired Chief Edward Rumolo, who were all present on Dec. 8, among other citizens of Little Silver that could not make it due to hectic holiday schedules.

With a small turnout, Chairman Frank Carmody briefly addressed certain issues of residents, including the main complaint regarding speeding on Silverton Avenue, especially between 7:30-8:00am and 3:30-6:00pm.  Speed surveys have been done, and there is a plan to potentially do another survey soon.

Speeding is always an ongoing issue near schools, and this is apparent. The committee not only addresses these issues, but also serves as an outlet to residents living on side streets that may have just as much of a speeding problem as busy intersections.

A town very friendly to pedestrians, an increase in crosswalks have been a voice of concern. There is a desire to paint them at Cross Street and Silverton Avenue to hopefully discourage drivers from being too careless or aggressive when there is a high volume of foot traffic. There is also another request to paint crosswalks at Church Street and Rumson Road, and a general repainting of crosswalks with bolder stripes in high-traffic locations.

If you are a Little Silver resident and you have noticed an issue in traffic flow that could use improving, you are welcome to attend an upcoming meeting of the Little Silver Traffic & Safety Committee. .
