Plan for DPW Yard at Fort Monmouth to be Reworked

FMERA vote on sublease moved to October

The plan to build a satellite DPW site on Fort Monmouth property in Eatontown will be reworked after county and borough representatives met last week.

The Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority (FMERA) was expected to take action on whether or not it will grant a sublease to the county for its proposed site that would include a salt storage building, fueling station, truck wash and a 260-foot 911 communications tower on the former motor pool property in Eatontown during its meeting tonight.

However, that vote has now been rescheduled for FMERA's October board meeting as the two entities hash out a broader plan, according to a release on FMERA's web site.

The two sides met on Sept. 13 to discuss the plan and decided to alter the plan.

"Attendees from both the county and Eatontown agreed that for the ultimate benefit of the residents of the region, and to facilitate the eventual successful redevelopment of the former fort property, it was imperative for both sides to think regionally and work together for the common good," the release states.

"In response to Eatontown residents’ questions and concerns, the county officials advanced preliminary plans to set aside additional areas of green space, install bermed landscaped buffers along property lines, deed restrict boundary lines to preclude any additional streets, remove and transform specific currently asphalted areas to green space, direct county vehicle traffic away from neighborhoods and toward more commercial roadways, and to consider other means of minimizing any impact on nearby residents," the release continues.

County and Eatontown residents also discussed other ways to share services that could "enhance both Eatontown’s and the County’s ability to provide services to their respective constituents that would save both time and money."

The Eatontown Council passed a resolution opposing the plan at its meeting last week and several residents who live in the area of the proposed site have spoken out against the plan.

The site is located near Rose Court and College Avenue and the main entrance to the DPW yard would be Nicodemus Avenue.
