Oceanport Will Seek Grant For Blackberry Bay Park Improvements

The borough is looking to secure a Monmouth County Open Space grant for the repairs.

By Christopher Sheldon

Oceanport will apply for a grant to fix the damaged bulkhead and boat ramp at Blackberry Bay Park.

Councilman Jerry Bertekap said during the Aug. 15 council meeting that a Monmouth County Open Space Grant is available for repair projects such as these in towns hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

"There was a preference to send money to Sandy-affected communities, which we are one, and they are looking for bigger projects like the bulkhead in Blackberry Bay (Park)," Bertekap said.

He said the borough would a have a "good shot" at receiving the grant which could amount to $250,000.

Borough Engineer William White said the county will need a concept plan for the scope of the work when the borough applies for the grant.

There will be a public hearing on the borough's application for the grant at the next Oceanport Council meeting on Sept. 5.
