Oceanport Mayor Supports Twilight Racing at Monmouth Park

Mahon expressed track's importance to local economy at a June panel discussion at Monmouth County Library's Eastern Branch

Oceanport Mayor Michael J. Mahon made it very clear how near and dear his town's racetrack is to him, his council, and the citizens they serve at a panel on the horse racing industry hosted by H. Robb Levinsky of Kenwood Racing at the Eastern Branch of the Monmouth County Library last month.

"We love Monmouth Park," said Mahon, who was not on the panel, but sitting in the audience as an interested party. "We view it as open space. We view it as history. We view it as jobs. I live a short distance away, and the first thing in the morning I hear is the PA."

Mahon chairs the Monmouth Park Task Force, a borough committee dedicated to protecting the interests of town's thoroughbred racetrack.

In the above video, Mahon pledges support for the industry as a whole, stating that Oceanport would support the implementation of slot machines (aka video lottery terminals or VLTs, which are currently outlawed everywhere in the state except Atlantic City) and twilight racing.

"If [the horsemen (a group that includes trainers, owners and jockeys)] want twilight racing, I think we can make that happen." said Mahon.
