Obama: "This Is Not Over''

President addresses nation on federal response to Hurricane Irene; praises emergency responders.

President Barak Obama addressed the nation Sunday on the federal role in the response to Hurricane Irene.

Obama, speaking from the Rose Garden, praised the work of emergency responders from local, state and federal level and pledged the full support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security to assist state and local officials as they deal with the continuing threat of flooding and power outages along the eastern Seaboard.

“I have told Governors and mayors throughout the affected areas, if they need something, I want to know about it,’’ Obama said.

Obama, flanked by the heads of FEMA and Homeland Security, cautioned residents in affected areas that the threat of continued flooding will likely pose a significant threat for some time to come, as rivers continue above flood levels in the coming days.

“This is not over,’’ Obama said. “The impacts of this storm will continue to be felt for some time. Power may be out for days in some areas.’’

But, Obama praised the efforts of officials and residents alike, saying this disaster was a “shining example’’ of American cooperation.

“That’s what makes the United States of America a strong and resilient country – its strong and resilient people,’’ he said.

Obama on Saturday declared New Jersey a disaster area, freeing up federal money for relief efforts and allowing FEMA to coordinate clean-up.
