Little Silver Cops Get Raises

New contract would be retroactive to Jan. 1

The Little Silver Borough Council introduced an ordinance Monday night to ratify an agreement recently reached with the police officers' union that would mean a 2 percent salary increase for members of the department, retroactive to Jan. 1 of this year.

The borough had been negotiating over the last several months with the union. The previous three-year contract expired last Dec. 1.

Under the new contract, a captain would receive $110,564 a year; a lieutenant $104,306; a sergeant $98,401; a police officer with seven years of service $92,401; six years, $85,935; five years, $79,038; four years, $72,141; three years, $65,243; two years, $58,347; and one year $51,450. A probationary officer would get $44,553 a year.

The council Monday also adopted an ordinance that would increase the current fees for cat and dog licenses. Deputy Borough Clerk Helen Gormley said that the borough was one of the few towns in the region that has not increased the fees up to now.

The new fees go into effect Jan. 1, 2012. For cats, the fee increases to $15 for an unneutered cat, and $12 for a neutered cat. For dogs, the license fee is $10.80 for a nonvicious dog and $700 for a dog that is potentially vicious. That $700 is not an increase. Dogs also need a registration tag that is $1.20. Unneutered dogs also get a surcharge of $3.
