Free Mold Remediation Workshops in Neptune

Seminars for homeowners and contractors on Feb. 12

Free mold remediation workshops are being held in Neptune on Feb. 12.

The workshops are presented by the Affordable Housing Alliance and NeighborWorks® America and instruction is provided by The National Center for Healthy Housing. The Affordable Housing Alliance is using conference space at the Asbury Park Press building, 3601 Highway 66, Neptune, for the workshops.

A morning session, 8:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m., will share up-to-date information about health risks, pre-work inspections, work set-up and staging, systematic clean-out and proper tear-out procedures and more information important for contractors, building inspectors and other housing professionals working on mold remediation.

An afternoon session, 1:45 to 5:45 p.m., will instruct homeowners and other interested members of the public about these same issues, as well as share helpful information on retrofit upgrade considerations for energy savings, healthy housing-related materials and equipment, and tips for hiring mold remediation professionals.

“Mold will continue to be a serious health issue and an obstacle to successful, long-term rebuilding,” says Donna M. Blaze, CEO of the Affordable Housing Alliance.

“Many so-called experts are out there, but both building professionals and homeowners need to have the most current information from a credible, non-profit organization like the National Center for Healthy Housing and NeighborWorks America in order to make the right decisions, not get gouged financially and, most importantly, take the correct steps to eliminate mold permanently," Blaze said.

"Mold is a significant health risk which can be treated superficially and then recur in the spring and summer, once the weather gets warmer. Choosing the right materials, the right remediation techniques and the right contractor is very important.”

Training will cover:

  • A review of major health risks when working in a water-damaged home;
  • Proper personal protective equipment;
  • How to conduct pre-work inspections;
  • Site preparation - safety, first aid;
  • Systematic clean-out and proper tear out procedures;
  • Work set-up and staging - tools and supplies, trash removal, storage, temporary electric, etc.;
  • Pre-construction cleaning and treatment;
  • Drying out the building;
  • Retrofit upgrade considerations for energy and healthy housing-related materials and equipment;
  • Tips for hiring mold remediation professionals.
