Eatontown officials have expressed their desire to acquire the running track at Fort Monmouth for the borough.
Councilman Dennis Connelly said the county was originally going to acquire the property, which is located off of Park Avenue, but is no longer interested.
Connelly said he envisions sharing the property with Memorial School so its students could use the track and field for sports.
"It's either going to be our property or an outside agency," Connelly said. "I think this should be a top priority."
"I agree with everything you said," Eatontown Mayor Gerald Tarantolo said.
Tarantolo said he is meeting with Eatontown School District Superintendent Scott T. McCue and Fort Monmouth Economic Revitalization Authority Executive Director Bruce Steadman to discuss the borough's interest in the property.
Tarantolo said a notice of interest for the property has been sent to FMERA on behalf of the Eatontown Board of Education and the borough.
