Fort Monmouth closing cost reaches $2 billion

Fort Monmouth is scheduled to close on Sep. 15.

The final cost to close Fort Monmouth, and relocate most of operations elsewhere, has reached approximately $2 billion, according to the Asbury Park Press.

From APP.com:

 “The Army's Fiscal Year 2012 budget estimate for the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure round, released this week, pegs the final five-year cost at $1,856,761,000.

That is more than $1 billion more than the $789 million Department of Defense officials told the 2005 BRAC Commission closing the fort would cost.

The BRAC Commission voted in 2005 to support the Defense Department's recommendation that Fort Monmouth be closed and its mission moved to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md.”
