Development Proposal Triggers Opposition in Little Silver

The 39 units would include 8 for affordable housing

A proposal to build 39 homes in a vacant wooded area across from the railroad station has triggered opposition from some residents in Little Silver.

"Many of us feel this project is gross overbuilding," Chester Apy, a lawyer and former councilman, told the Borough Council at its meeting July 18.

A similar project was approved by the Planning Board in 2007, but the approval lapsed after two years when nothing was done on the property.

That project was for senior citizen housing and included seven units of affordable housing for lower-income people. The current application by Javin L.P. welcomes all age groups and includes eight units of affordable housing. It is an attempt to take advantage of legislation that encourages developments that include at least 20 percent of affordable housing, Apy said.

Craig Gianetti, the Middletown lawyer who represents the project, said he would have to check with his client before commenting. He did not call back after that.

The Planning Board is scheduled to continue reviewing the application at its meeting 7 p.m. August 9 in Borough Hall.
