Deadline for Senior Freeze Program Extended

Senior citizens have until Monday, Sept. 16 to apply for the property tax relief program.

The filing deadline for the 2012 “Senior Freeze” Property Tax Relief Program has been extended to Monday, Sept. 16.

“We want to be certain that every resident who is eligible for property tax relief benefits under the Senior Freeze Program has the opportunity to apply for them,” State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff said in a news release.

Residents will have ample time to apply for this “valuable benefit,” Eristoff said.

In February, the Division of Taxation mailed 2012 Senior Freeze application booklets to current participants and residents who may be eligible.

Reimbursement checks will be mailed to eligible senior and disabled residents who applied in mid-July. Checks for eligible applicants who filed after the original June 3 deadline will be processed and delivered thereafter.

This program is separate from the Homestead Benefit Program, which has different eligibility requirements, applications and filing schedules. Residents can qualify for benefits under both programs, but the total amount of property tax relief received cannot exceed the amount of property taxes paid on their principal residence for the same year, Division of Taxation Director Michael Bryan said in the news release.
