The Trials and Tribulations of Point Road School Drop Off

With construction starting on the new kindergarten classrooms and ongoing road closure due to the Seven Bridges project, getting your child to school each morning keeps getting more challenging.

Just when Point Road School parents thought they had adjusted to navigating the road closures and detours in place because of the Seven Bridges Road project, the curve balls seem to keep coming.

This week, the closing of the Seven Bridges teachers' lot and usual drop off area for many students (to accommodate construction of new kindergarten classrooms) sent lines of traffic crawling up and down Lippincott and Westwood, only to encounter a separate road improvement project going on back there.

And then there was the brush pickup public works scheduled at the height of it all Thursday morning along Point Road, requiring drivers to snake by, single file.

"The traffic situation is a concern and the coordination of the multiple projects has been a challenge," says Little Silver Police Chief Daniel Shaffery.

He says that the Lippincott project was initially scheduled for November but Superstorm Sandy pushed it back a few months. He says he would have preferred seeing the roadwork done during the school district's summer break, but the company performing the work had a scheduling conflict.

"I am anticipating the opening of Seven Bridges Road at the end of this month and I remain hopeful that it will alleviate some of the traffic congestion," Shaffery says, "not just around our schools, but throughout the town."

We're wondering: What's everyone's strategy? Have you decided to walk or ride bikes with your kids to school while this is going on?
