VIDEO: Serving Up 118 lbs. of Ham and Tradition at Oceanport Hook & Ladder

The fire company's annual ham dinner and biggest fundraiser of the year was held Sunday.

Tom Crochet, president of Oceanport Hook & Ladder, started cooking the 118 pounds of ham served up at Sunday's annual fundraiser at around 3 a.m. so by dinnertime, the firehouse smelled good.

The fire company's biggest fundraiser of the year, members serve up about 150 ham dinners on March 24 that came with sides like coleslaw, potatoes and Bob Howie's "world renowned" gravy, according to Councilman (and fire member) Gerry Bertekap who was busy working in the kitchen.

Howies said that the annual event dated back to the 1960's.

Members of the Ladies Auxiliary and Explorers were bustling about the dining area and busy in back packaging meals to be delivered later that afternoon to Oceanport and Eatontown seniors.

"We're like little elves," said one of the auxiliary members as she wrapped salads in foil.
